Internet Passes Radio for Political News -Survey
WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The Internet surpassed radio as a source for political news in the United States last year as more people went online to keep up with the presidential election campaign, according to a new report released on Sunday.

Twenty-nine percent of U.S. adults used the Internet to get political news last year, according to the Pew Internet and American Life Project. That's up from 4 percent in 1996 and 18 percent in 2000.

Television remained the dominant medium for most voters, but 18 percent said they got most of their political news from the Internet, compared with 17 percent who said they turned to the radio for their news.

For those with a broadband connection at home, the Internet rivaled newspapers in importance.

4. Naaah, they'll just shut down their news divisions and give us...
ALL REALITY SHOWS, ALL THE TIME!!!!!

They're cheap to produce, they appeal to the voyeur in many folks, and so long as you can see someone being humilated in public, your life seems better by comparison. The day approaches when Jerry Springer's little program will seem quaint and staid.

Ugh!!!!!

8. Yes, they're getting nervous. Of late both the print and live media..
are paying attention to the blogosphere. I noticed that they are trying to suggest in their coverage that the blogs are not to be trusted, like print and tv journalism can be. :eyes: They chide bloggers as wannabee journalists. Ironically, we chide them for the same thing.

9. It's good to have the numbers - We must fight to save the free internet!
I've been working to get a new Forum set up to make it easier to organize and follow news on preserving the last bastions of the free press. I'm hoping that it will be called something like:
Free Internet/ Free Press/ First Amendment Issues Forum
I think it's going to happen and will post more on this in the next couple of days.

Thanks for this post - I hope you will be reposting in the Media Forum later on so it can be found there.

10. Every time I participate in a Zogby survey,
I answer the question, "Where do you get your news?" with the only logical thing a good liberal can answer these days -- the internet! Now, I just wish Zogby would ask me, "why?"

12. Survey Finds Surge for Web as Source of Political News, As Newspapers Sink

NEW YORK A Pew Center study released today found that using the Internet to get news of politics during the 2004 presidential contest grew sixfold from 1996, while the influence of newspapers sank.

In 1996, only 3% of those surveyed called the Web one of their two leading sources of campaign news. In 2004, the figure was 18%. Reliance on TV rose slightly from 72% to 78% but prime use of newspapers plunged from 60% to 39%.

Four in ten of the heavy Web said they found it an important tool in helping them make a voting choice.

The telephone-based survey of more than 2,000 Americans was ocnducted for the Pew Research Center for The People and the Press and the Pew Internet and American Life Project.

And the newspapers respond
Edited on Sun Mar-06-05 09:57 PM by Newsjock
By cutting back even more on that "boring" international news that "research" shows readers don't want, and by adding even more of that "lifestyle" "news you can use."

Unless a new breed of editors take over the top spots in a big hurry, newspapers are going to render themselves useless as part of the civic equation. No, they won't go away -- they're still the leading local ad-delivery mechanism. But newspapers will stop practicing what a 2004 Gannett report quaintly called first amendment journalism and will instead go whole-hog into Gannett's idea of Real Life, Real News.

Fear.

1. I hope this is not a tactic to killl our beloved news outlets by
destroying their reader/viewership. Man - that would make me mad if they did that. But what is stopping them? OR perhaps the media outlets themselves are starving their masters.... naw, I would never be that lucky.

http://www.ebcvg.com/news.php?id=4719

The number of Americans relying on the Internet for political news grew sixfold between the 1996 and 2004 presidential campaigns. This growth was accompanied by a sharp drop in the influence of newspapers.

Chicago Sun-Times reported that Eighteen percent of American adults cited the Internet as one of their two main sources of news about the presidential races, compared with 3 percent in 1996. The reliance on television grew slightly to 78 percent, up from 72 percent.

Meanwhile, the influence of newspapers dropped to 39 percent last year, from 60 percent in 1996, according to the joint, telephone-based survey from the Pew Research Center for the People and the Press and the Pew Internet and American Life Project.

17. True but...
although I no longer subscribe to the NYT, I do read them on-line. Am I getting news from the print media or the internet. Or if you link the the Chicago Sun-Times in your post above, again is it print or internet.

I'd think that if the "print" media played its cards right, it could increase its influence and readership, but would have to find a new model for attracting "eyeballs".

20. Not surprising - with nothing but hatespew on the AM band . . .
And with most FM stations devoting minutes each day to news, with those zany wacky guys on the Morning Zoo at (Fill in the blank)-FM, not surprising at all
