Powerful Republicans Worry About Bush Budget Cuts
Tue Feb 8, 2005 06:00 PM ET

By Anna Willard

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - President Bush's proposed spending cuts drew worried criticism on Tuesday from the Republican heads of congressional budget committees, and key party members said his priorities were not binding.

But the lawmakers expressed a shared goal of austerity as Bush said they must make "difficult choices" to rein in the budget deficit, which has surged to record levels during a presidency that inherited a surplus.

A top White House official said Bush was prepared to veto spending bills for the first time if necessary.

Bush sent Congress a $2.57 trillion budget plan for the 2006 fiscal year on Monday which proposes sweeping cuts across the budget and eliminates or reduces 150 programs. The Republican-controlled Congress is supposed to pass its own version by April 15, which will set spending limits for the year.

3. Then get rid of the tax cut for the top 1%
and get some accountability in the DOD. They can sure make $$ disappear fast yet our troops are begging family and friends to send basic equipment and food. Seems odd, doesn't it?

5. What's even more odd
is when those same troops declare Kerry to be the enemy and vote 80 percent+ for the man who sent them to die.

Sometimes you've just got to let those with deathwishes act on their "patriotic" desires. And I'd say fair warning has been given by now to any young American that the U.S. military is like the Hotel California: you can check out any time you'd like, but you can never leave.

2. Love it when his "own" start speaking out
Maybe it'll start a trend??

What I'd like to know is where the hell all the money went. Clinton left these creeps with a huge SURPLUS. So they first had to spend the surplus to get to zero, then go downwards from there.

Mind-boggling.

I know it isn't all going to "the war."

10. OK, then why did on the right wingers say there was a surplus so give our
money back? Remember? The rich paid the most in taxes so they should get more?

I think you can't have it both ways.

that the government should not have our money sitting there in a surplus..so we had to have tax cuts...so if we are ..this.. in debt now..why doesn't he repeal the tax cuts..every country is warning us that they are going to pull away from the dollar for the euro because of our ridiculous out of control debt..china owns most of our debt..a frigging communist country owns most of our debt...so we should just keep borrowing but never tax the rich..,,well buddy i am one of the rich.,.and i would rather pay more taxes than have a communist country or japan owning my countries debt...so when do they pull the plug on us??

you are a pitiful ..just keep making excuses..but get your heils ready!!!

be responsible...support the troops?? bull we had troops fight those countries .. who now own our debt.. and our future..

like my father, he's rolling over now!!

7. They couldn't run up the deficite fast enough -
They couldn't run up the deficite fast enough - so that in the second term they could institute some 'needed' cuts to programs and get away with it. create a crisis and then take tough measures to fix it - is an old sociopathic trick.

That Clinton Surplus must have been the most hated thing they had ever seen. That is why they hated him so much - cause his way was just as good - if not better than theirs.

What a bunch of ********!

12. Bush believes people are poor because they are lazy
...and has no idea what life is really liked. At least John Kerry has to work his way through college collecting bottles. Shrub has had everything handed to him on a silver platter (or brought to him by relatives in key places.

13. They'd better worry
here in Georgia, we're about to lose thousands of jobs due to Bush's cuts. So, thousands of Bush voters are about to learn about karma. And their karma cleanser is going to be booting out the yahoos who lied to them. They can spout fundie silliness all they want. Once it hits the pocketbook, they're ours.
Be worried, little Republicans. Be very worried.

18. If you're talking about Lockheed
I bet it will be more like 4000. The Marietta plant that makes the C-130 and F-22 has about 8000 workers.
