Edwards to head poverty center at UNC

CHAPEL HILL (AP) — Former senator and Democratic vice presidential candidate John Edwards will head a new University of North Carolina center that will study ways to move people out of poverty, the school said Friday.

Edwards will be director of the Center on Poverty, Work and Opportunity, which the university said will bring together faculty and public policy experts to examine "innovative and practical ideas for moving more Americans out of poverty and into the middle class."

Edwards, a 1977 graduate of UNC's law school, also will be a guest lecturer on the campus.

My specialty would be the interaction between poverty and disability. For example, disability has proven to be the single most stubborn barrier to reducing welfare caseloads, among both people with disabilities themselves and those who have children with disabilities who have special care needs. Then there's our 70% unemployment rate (not a typo!) compounded by chronic underemployment, and... well, I'll just save the rest for Mr. Edwards when he calls (do be sure to remember the time change, John :-) )
