I just had to experience the experience of living under a "dictatorship", hence the reason I am here.

No, actually, it's because of my wife. She's a Noo Yawker.

I do hope John Kerry wins in November though, I have been going out of my mind living here.
Thankfully I found DU. It certainly helps one retain ones sanity.

17. Born Bronx, raised Bayside, live in Manhattan.
Edited on Mon Apr-19-04 11:37 PM by aquart
Now about Bayside. Bayside is a neighborhood of tall trees in Queens. Lots of 311 calls after a storm. Bayside is so bucolic that the cops refer to it as Fort Azalea.

Bayside is where yuppies went to spawn. Can't afford the starter houses now.

But the Post Office does not like Bayside. Doesn't like any of the many individual neighborhoods in Queens. The Post Office wants us to write our return addresses as Flushing, NY. Flushing is miles away and can be reached easily by subway. Bayside, however, cannot. By subway tranferring to bus, yes, or the LIRR's Port Washington line, or automobile. But not by subway alone. It is clearly not Flushing.

Bayside. Not Flushing. Flushing has the Bowne House. Quakers. A florishing Chinatown. Bayside was the home of America's original film colony. Where you can run into someone who once watched location shoots with Mae West and Victor McLaglen in the neighborhood streets. Bayside, which allowed far right fundamentalists to take over the school board.

44. Ithaca's a very cool place
I'm hearing good things about the College, though apparently there's a very extremist right-wing and active college repug organization there, there're also lots of good progressive student activists too.

No republicans elected in Ithaca, the city council is Dems and Greens, Dems with Green backing. Lots of "Bush must go" lawn signs and window signs.

In Ithaca in 2000, Nader got more votes than Bush (Gore came in first, Nader second, Bush a very poor third place).

Winters are long though, if you're not used to it it might freak you out a bit after the sixth month of winter... :-)

36. Welcome to DU, Winter1979!
You're among friends here. The bumperstickers I see around here are all Bush-Cheney. I have so far resisted the urge to rear-end anybody at stop lights. Then there's the "support the troops" moran who hangs out, with his home-made sign, in the middle of downtown, getting cars to honk for him. I haven't run him over, either. It's tough where I live. Sigh.

50. Good God! How can anyone be proud of Bush* when 9/11
happened on his watch. Oh, I forgot, it was Clinton's fault, like anything else that Bush* doesn't want to take responsibility for.

Carter is my hero, as well. My favorite president of my lifetime. I post often on the Israeli/Palestinian forum here on DU because I think that this is a tragic conflict and should be addressed. Of course, this was before Bush* invaded Iraq, creating another one of similar proportions. I have always said that Carter should be sent to negotiate in I/P. He is brilliant at this and managed a historic peace treaty between Israel and Egypt. But Bush* is just too partisan. He leaves Powell out of the loop because he is too moderate. Bush* remains boldly partisan, even though he lost the popular vote in 2000 and never had a mandate, then, let alone now.:grr:

I'm from the Clifton Park area too. It always seemed to me that people in the towns closer to Schenectady were more liberal-minded, but then when I searched my zip code at opensecrets.org, it turned up a LOT of big Bush donors, and only a few Dems.

82. Yes, I do. There are too few of us here
I will let you know if I hear more about that meet-up. I just hope I didn't miss it. I did attend a candlelight vigil on the eve of Bush*s invasion of Iraq and was totally amazed at the attendance. It was at the bandstand by the library. Just a few people signed up, but I lost count at 75! And there were even more at the second meet-up spot, by Burger King. We joined together and walked around downtown Glens Falls with our lighted candles. It would have made a beautiful photo, if the Post Star had covered it. They did cover one anti-war protest, but the one photo was of that crazy "support the troops" guy, who stands in the middle of downtown, getting drivers to honk their horns for him. Figures.:-(

77. Ha. I used to live there.
People used to say they lived in Fleetwood when they didn't want to say they live in Mount Vernon.

Do they still do that?

78. Isn't that what I did
So yes.

The rest of Mt. Vernon seem to be a mess (put mildly). I've noted my mail gets here, despite USPS objections, w/Fleetwood.

Maybe if I stick around, can organize these people to secede. Yeah, bigger fish to fry til November....

60. Go Brooklyn!
Didn't realize we had state forums. Originally from all over the place, finally settled down in Brooklyn for the past four years!

62. Hey guys!
I'm a Native Noo Yawker, was born in Brooklyn and have lived here my whole life. Flatbush in da house!

Hey any other Brooklyn College students/alums in here? I *know* there's gotta be some cause a few months ago I saw some dude with a DU t-shirt walking around. :) I love it there, so many flaming libs, it's fabulous. My mom told me that in the 50s it was called the Little Red Schoolhouse, LOL.

89. LOL, PATRICK!
I used to joke that the speed limit on the Northway was higher in my part of the state because those downstaters think that anyone who lives up here are just hunters and trappers and renegade Indians! Our representative, Jerry Solomon, made us famous for that on a national level!
