The next mayor of Brockton will have to be a visionary — someone who can handle not only the immediate issues facing the city, but position Brockton to compete for business and industry. It must be someone who lets the city aspire to greatness and inspires residents to become more involved in the political process.

The candidate with that vision is Jass Stewart, whom we are pleased to endorse for mayor.

Stewart is a dreamer with his feet on the ground, a man with lofty goals and a program to achieve those goals. It is irrelevant that he has been a resident of the city for just six years, coming from Texas in search of a new city to call home. He has been able to translate his background in business and urban planning into a clearly defined blueprint for Brockton's future.

The primary purpose of his five-point plan is to make Brockton a more attractive place for businesses and homeowners. He believes that increasing those bases will allow him to accomplish great things in education, fighting crime and providing jobs.

Stewart has a solid plan to improve neighborhoods from the ground up and revitalize a stagnant police department by naming a new chief who has the same vision he has — all the while building value for Brockton citizens, from residents of the entrenched ethnic enclaves to the new young professionals seeking a place to call home.

Stewart made a decision to work on that foundation when he arrived in Brockton in 1999.

A vote for Stewart is a vote for faith in this city's potential.

How's this for starters? A gay, married, black father running for mayor in a city that has never elected a minority city councilor.

Jass Stewart doesn't like it when he's described as such, and his point is well-taken. Facing a seasoned politician in Jim Harrington, he's had a hard enough time just getting people to learn his name, never mind having to explain his personal life. (For the record, it's not pronounced "Jazz.")

Stewart's storyline is interesting, and he's a sharp man with progressive ideas who, most admit, has a bright future in politics.

His underdog status, natural affability and aggressive campaigning have helped spark a mayor's race that otherwise might have been as eventful as fall foliage.

That's because of his opponent. Harrington, a 16-year councilor, has been one of the city's most popular politicians, despite what the firefighters say about him.

Harrington, the only councilor who ever really confronted the untouchable Mayor Jack Yunits the past decade, has widespread support. In fact, even after the infamous camera confrontation — where he slapped at a protesting firefighter who put a camera in his face — he was the top vote-getter in the September preliminary.

Although gay parenting is on the rise, especially in states where gays and lesbians are allowed to adopt children, it is still not an everyday occurrence. It is even more unusual to find openly gay or lesbian African American parents in same sex households. That's why Massachusetts black, gay couple Jass Stewart and Denzil Paul, are so unique.

Stewart, 31, is originally from Dallas but now lives in Brockton, Massachusetts, and has been out of the closet since he was 17. The six-foot tall, bald-headed, dark skinned brother says he always hoped for a family of his own, even though he knew he couldn't have one in the traditional sense.

"Family is very important to me," explains Stewart. "It's not just that it is a personal support system. It grounds, affirms and empowers you."
