As others here have indicated, I laugh out loud at the clever, dry, esoteric and wry, -but as anyone who knows me well will attest, I also laugh out loud at poopy jokes, (though, of course, those are not permitted in the Lounge) and have been known to smile and nod at redneck humour and simple wordplay.

As a person whom most know is quite close to and knowledgeable about both DS1 and ForrestGump, I feel neither of them are truly trying to lament the quality humour nearly so much as the quantity of copycats. (I don't speak for DS1, and I don't play ForrestGump on TV.)

Early in the day of the conflagration in question there were a couple of rounds of copycats so prevalent they took up almost all of the front page and half the second page of the Lounge. That kind of posting feels like the equivalent of Spam. Sure we can ignore it, delete it, put it in a killfile, but regardless of those options, no one is really thrilled about Spam. If we had that kind of posting behaviour in GD-P or GD, the Admin would quickly put posting limits in place. Oh wait. They did. x(

I don't have anyone on my ignore list and I haven't for some time. DS1 ignores just about everyone who regularly copycats. It's not personal. Copycat threads degrade his experience at DU so he doesn't chose to view them. So...copycat threads directed specifically at DS1 are doubly pointless and a waste of bandwidth. And I don't believe ForrestGump's use of the made up word 'ignorami' was meant as an insult so much as an indication that he, too, was already ignoring those who repeatedly copycat and was sure even before he took that individual off ignore to read her post, that she would turn out to be one of those whom he opted not to read for that reason.

I don't think that the level of humour in the Lounge is ever a bad thing if it lifts and elevates the mood. But I would ask everyone currently offended in the Lounge to do some self-examination. As of right now, it seems to me a lot of posters are posting out of bitterness, vengefullness, hardheadedness and a dogmatic determination to piss someone off for not seeing things their way. That's not really elevating the mood. If you want to make a point about humour, being pissy is not really going to win friends and influence people.

Now let's all hold hands and sing Kumbaya. Except DS1. 'Cause 'U.S. Marines don't fuckin' sing Kumbaya.'

There was a post that I felt was a personal call out (still do, and I know others who did) that basically called me inane and unfunny and to some extent being unworthy to post in the Lounge because my sense of humor wasn't someone elses. Sorry folks thats how I feel. I've been insulted enough in other places on DU to know when I was being attacked.
I responded. I also feel justified that my thread, while somewhat controversial was relatively civil. The original thread was full of deleted messages and deleted subthreads.
I'm used to the attacks in the more umm interesting forums (R/T, Health, GD, GDP) but not here where I let down my hair and blow off steam. enough to think about whether I should take a DU vacation. However, my inbox is full of very supportive people, so while perhaps I will have a lower profile, I'll probably remain.

Having said that, I will say this. I don't necessarily disagree with you or FG about excessive copycatting. What got me was how the message was conveyed and the tone of it.

Were I an old skooler like him and wanted to comment on copycatting, I think I would have taken a didactic approach, with a little more humor and less scolding. People were wounded by his post, and that certainly fails the criteria of elevating the mood of the Lounge. I certainly would have taken a less defensive posture than the semi-mocking one that I took.

The Lounge is a community, and as such we need to get along with each other. We can be smart-asses, sure, but at the end of the day, we need to first and foremost affirm one another on our journey together.
