Detroit Tigers Fans of DU...I am sorry...
It is because I was at the game that the Tigers lost. Apologies all around. Damn, it was hot.

But...I got this great picture of somebody they call "Mags". ;)

Actually, it was a great day with my son. We were the first row in the bleachers, right field...I could have interferred with play...we were that close. :D

are so much better when you see them in person.
I love baseball but sometimes it can get boring but in person it never is boring no matter how good or bad the game is. :)

13. I still remember my first major league game at Briggs Stadium
My dad took me to a night game. I still remember the magic of coming out of the ramp looking down from right field at the sea of green and the brightness of the lights.

I rooted for the Tigers through think and thin. But, I just don't enjoy the game as much anymore.
:)

They're losing again today and I'm sure you're not there again.

They had to lose sometime -- they couldn't possibly have gone the rest of the season without another loss.

It was fun seeing WannaBeGrumpy and WannaBePassingFair here last night. Now you and PassingFair will have to be careful what you post!

20. Are the Tigers for real this year?
They have been doormats and laughing stocks for so long and then "BAM", they have the best record in baseball.
I was a big fan of the 68 Tigers. Denny McClain, Mickey Lolich, Willie Horton, Bill Freehan, Dick McCauliffe, Ray Oyler, Gates Brown, Norm Cash, Jim Northrup, Al Kaline, Mickey Stanley,Earl Wilson, Pat Dobson, Don Wert...
That was one great Tiger team. And they beat Bob Gibson and the Cards in the WS too!

I'm a used to be a Brewers fan. It's been an amazing season for the Tigers, as they are already surpassing their win record from that horrid season a couple of years back. :D

39. Hey maveric
Edited on Tue May-30-06 02:26 PM by 5thGenDemocrat
My first Tiger game was July 20, 1968. Baltimore beat Detroit 5-3 and Denny took one of his six losses (against 31 wins) vs Dave McNally. McNally hit a home run in the fourth inning (IIRC) and Frank Robinson hit another in the seventh or eighth.
I wonder what the odds are of having the first homer one ever saw live being hit by a pitcher.
I was crushed by the loss as only a baseball- (Tiger-) crazy eleven year old could be. Worse, my older brother Chuck (no particular baseball fan, he) revelled in my misery and picked on me throughout the very, very long bus trip back to Saginaw.
John
I liked Mickey Lolich better, anyhow.

23. How is the new stadium??
I know it's a few years old now, but is it better than Tiger Stadium?? I used to love that stadium. It was old school baseball. I was there in 1984 and this has the same type of feeling like that year!!!!

31. It is a beautiful stadium, but I wish they had rehabbed the old stadium.
It was a wonderful place, even if you did end up in a seat behind the poles. It is sad to drive by it (it still stands) and remember all of the activity that once used to happen there. It's like a ghosttown there now. :(

40. You and the Baseball Reference folks should love this story, LSK
My stepmom's father, Claral Lewis Gillenwater, pitched for the White Sox in 1923. He appeared in five games, winning one and losing three. One of his losses was to the Tigers, while he threw a complete game shutout vs Boston for his lone victory.
Anyhow, Grandpa G passed away in 1978 in Bradenton, FL and was cremated. Gloria (his daughter, my stepmom) went to the funeral home to retrieve the ashes, nicely placed in an urn, and headed back to the house in Ruskin.
Enroute, someone cut her off on US-41 and when Gloria hit the brakes, the urn containing Pa shot off the front seat and the ashes billowed into and onto every nook and cranny in the Ford Monarch. Long story short, much of the wily Sox righthander ended up in a Shop-Vac at some anonymous gas station along the Tamiami Trail. Funny family story, that.
John
When I get cremated, I hope someone has the sense to place the ashes in a Ziploc bag.
