A simpsons quote about donuts, but just as applicable to the windows of the S-Class--they're double glazed for extra silence. My neighbour (retired engineer) has one, and it's like riding around in a sunken living room.

48. I had a childhood love with Mercedes.
I think it was the logo that captured my heart most of all. I went thru a stage in childhood when I was interested in cars, but that eventually faded. But my love for Mercedes cars always stayed. I think It's the car that God meant for me to drive. (I drive a 1994 Nissan currently)

But, it was on condition that I'd sell it the day the warranty expired, which I did. Still haven't found a design worthy of replacing the XK. So I'll be sticking with the ol' Toyota truck we have for the time-being!

It's such a gorgeous design. It actually made me a little uncomfortable to drive it, because of all the stares...

on edit=I should add that it was used, and part of an estate sale. Nowhere near $98K, not even $98K Canadian!

to insult without knowing anything shows volumes about you.

Since you're clueless, this is entirely in response to a couple other threads here in the lounge where somebody was getting flamed for indulging himself with a nice night out with a good friend.

The point I was trying to make was that nobody else should be judging what people do with their own money, unless what they're doing with that money is illegal or immoral.

Immoral for the people to say the vehicle is WORTH that much...this is a crock of sh*t...and you being willing to pay that price? How many could they sell if no one was willing to buy? NONE ZILCH NADA....it is an EGO trip..and do not talk about a $600.00 dollar dinner that is CONSUMED...and no one to SEE the Cost...Expense...the Spending...however a $98,000 car is ALL EGO...because NO car is WORTH that much money...only EGOS are worth the expense...I say .....GET OVER IT!

I love ya babe...but this is totally over the top and is ONLY an EGO purchase!

I'll refer you to the second part of my subject line.

Get off your high fucking horse. When you can show me that every single cent you've spent in your entire life was on bare necessities and the rest given to the homeless, then you can judge.

I love ya too, but these attacks here are outrageous. It's not a zero-sum game. When I spend money it doesn't go into a pit. It goes to pay the salaries of the salesmen, mechanics, receptionists, engineers, and yes, janitors.

30. You are on the HIGH fuck**g horse....a 98,000 dollar horse..
It IS a ZERO SUM GAME....I agree that a 'trickle down' might reach some...the same amount ...sans the %of income to the salesman that could sell 10x at 1/10 the cost...the mechanics are paid not more than a mechanic servicing a Kia for god's sake....receptionsist...engineers...janitors....those 98,000 per vehicle price tags do not enlist more...but less...suppose you ...for your egos sake were forced to purchase 5 vehicles? more mechanics...more secretaries...more janitors needed there....

I have worked for many people...and the one thing I have discovered is that EGO is the most EXPENSIVE COMODITY ON EARTH...WE HAVE GAS GUZZLERS AND MEN IN IRAQ DYING FOR THEIR EGOS....AND THE BUSH EGO...ERGO!

31. sorry...
but it really ISN'T a zero sum game.

I'm sorry you think I'm egotistical. I posted the information to make a point about Will Pitt's thread.

You know ONE fact about me: I own a high-priced car. And from that information, you feel you can judge everything about me.

Do you wanna know more? Ya wanna know my years of volunteer work with dying AIDS patients? You wanna know about the years I spent protecting women entering and leaving abortion clinics? You wanna know how I help my elderly neighbors? You wanna know how I bought my parents a new house? Ya wanna know how I'm looking into a new career as a hospice nurse?

Once you know more about me, you'll be qualified to judge. But I think it's reactionary to claim to know all about my ego based on one fact.

49. no, pat...
My post was simply meant to point out that knowing ONE fact about a person is a pretty poor basis on which to judge them as people.

With the knowledge of that one fact, people here judged me to be egotistical, insecure and of having a small penis.

I think it's simply wrong to judge people that way. It's how the right-wing does it all the time: "You're gay?! You must be an awful person!"..... "You're pro-choice?! Why do you hate babie?".... etc. etc. etc.

The ENTIRE reason for even starting this thread was to get people to stop judging others based on one solitary fact. William Pitt, who's about as smart and nice as anybody I've ever seen on DU, was being SAVAGED because he spent $600 on a night out with a friend. I think that's ridiculous. We're all here for a short period of time. Let's stipulate that we ALL do good deeds with our time and money. Let's give people the benefit of the doubt when we only know a single solitary fact about them.

175. WilliamPitt was "savaged"? Gimme a break
What with his mom making remarks and him spilling his heart out to total strangers, he got a bit emotional when some people (like myself) asked him why he was spending a months rent on a meal for - he explained, but still got all huffy.

And now you're here bragging about your 100k car to teach us all a "lesson" about not judging people. WilliamPitt didn't deserve any bashing, but you sure as hell do.

A few startups huh? The most heavily subsidized industry in America, you do well, and you're coming on here to show off how much money you have. I'm trying to think of the appropriate name for this behavior, but it's probably against DU rules.

Go the FreeRepublic, they will ooh and aah for you.

My point is that judging the morality of a person based on ONE fact is wrong. It's reactionary. It's what the right wing christians do. Liberals ought to be better than that.

And if you think the priorities I listed above are not good enough, you can fax me a list of the ones you think I ought to have. I promise to give it all the attention it deserves.

and you're deliberately ignoring it.

I posted the other stuff to show that people are, well... MORE than a single possession. Judging people that way is often a mistake.

Furthermore, insulting total strangers based on that one fact is often a bigger mistake. I've had strangers curse me for having a darwin fish on my car. These supposed "christians" judged my entirety based on a sticker.

I think it's a stupid, ignorant thing to do. And I think liberals ought not do it.

170. I don't understand why you are so rabid because a person................
has a nice, luxury car and wants to enjoy it.

So, I should go buy a Cover Girl lipstick for $5 (which I have to re-apply every half hour meaning that I have to buy this product more often) rather than this Chanel one at $23.50 + taxes, that I really totally love (every aspect from the container to the gorgeous and long lasting product inside)? This is a small example.

How can people live their lives like this, always having to have sack cloths and ashes in order to be "good people"?????? I don't understand this vehemence towards this man who purchased a luxury item and enjoys it.

You only live life once. Many people will be old, bitter little things, wishing they had done so much more with their lives when they had the chance. That is a fact.

How could I have been so stupid as to not realize that your singleton thread where you boast to the world how much money you can afford to spend on a car was really a well reasoned and poignant commentary on what people do with their money and the legalities of expenditure.

From now on I'll read every single comment in each thread before I respond so I won't make the mistake of misinterpreting statements that say "I am a rich, insufferable prick", and see that it is an allegory for rich and compelling social commentary whose meaning is hidden in the tomes of DU.

And if you're still interested in the size of my penis, you can get up-close and personal with it.

I'm kind of drooling over a couple of Mercedes models. One could reasoanbly argue that no car is worth that, and that a '75 Dart will still get you to the mall, but there's something to be said for owning leading edge technology available nowhere else.

It's not so much the cost of the car, but 12-14mpg, and premium, no less...

It made vroom-vroom noises and set off sparks when I ran it over the carpeting. LOL. Think I was 5 or 6 at the time.

But I try to keep it off the carpeting. Well... I don't have carpeting. But it would be hell on the hardwood floors.

Not to be nosy but did you have to pay over list? Being a Ford retiree and Jaguar being owned by them now I can get them on the A plan which is a few percent below dealers cost. I was looking at them a couple of years ago, but where I live I would only be able to drive it 8 months or so a year if we have a bad winter. It would be pretty much a summer time car here in northern Illinois depending on how bad of a winter we have. Again, I am really happy for you, and thanks for helping to keep my retirement check coming every month by purchasing a Ford product. I do appreciate it.

59. Hey NNN....
No, I didn't pay over list... put paid full price, which is actually 85k, but add the taxes and such it ends up 98. Yes, I paid a nice luxury tax on it. Was happy to do it.

It's a Titanium convertible with a black roof and black interior.

And thanks for pointing out that people who buy expensive things actually DO help other people. That 98K didn't go into the pocket of the CEO. It paid YOUR salary. The gentleman who sold me the car was an immigrant from Mexico. He worked very hard and became a top-notch car salesman. He had three daughters in college. All funded by people who buy Jaguars.

You just can't be a REAL (liberal/progressive/bona fide) DU'er if you are successful. Gosh, and you even worked hard and got yourself a nice car...and you do nice things for others, too.

I would suggest that you immediately renounce capitalism, sell all of your possessions, quit your job, (better yet, get yourself fired) dress in a nice sackcloth, and maybe, just maybe you'll get into the club.

146. I kinda hate the whole idea
of "successful" meaning "able to afford a $98,000 vehicle" because by that definition Bush, Cheney, Lay, Weill, etc. are successful as well. Coulter and Limbaugh are also successful. I, on the other hand, am a failure because I quit my good paying job at the Air Force.
No reason I should resent the doctor who wants $200 just to take my temperature is there? Why should his "success" make me resentful? It is not like I am paying four weeks wages for a single nitro pill, or then again, maybe I am. It looks like a negative sum game to me, with me on the short straw for pay and on the long straw for expense.

It's a mindset. Personally, I go a "BIT" above the speed-limit, but rarely insanely so. But I have clocked 110 mph just to check things out. That's nothing compared to some people.

Pilots do it ALL to the max. Of all the things I wanna do, flying is NOT one of them. I scuba dive, been bungee jumping, etc. etc..... but hell, I make a thousand mistakes a day. I don't want one of them to kill me.

I drive a 94 Oldsmobile Silhouette van. It's offroad now because it has a blown engine and I can't afford to repair it or replace it. What does that say about me? I'm worthless because I haven't achieved "the American Dream"? For your #^%&^ing information I have had to spend the last 10 years taking care of a mentally ill and learning disabled person who has a lot of trouble in the employment scene. It's kept me broke. So judge away. I'm sure you can find someone as shallow as yourself to agree that a 98K car is about the height of success. And I'm sure after you die everyone will say, wow what a winner, he had a 98K car.

you misunderstand. I posted it not to boast. I posted it to make a point about the savaging WilliamPitt was taking in another thread for spending $600 of his own hard-earned dollars on a special evening for a friend. I think it's horrible to attack people that way.

I'm sorry we can't discuss the bigger issue without exchanging non-stop insults.

My point is simply that we shouldn't judge people's entire lives and personalities based on a single fact.

114. I saw those posts and nobody was judging his "entire life"
--a few, a VERY few were resentful that he could get together $600 to spend in one evening. Broke as I am I couldn't get into that, because it was not an ostentatious thing, it was not a vain thing, it was a self-sacrificing and generous thing. And the vast majority of posts in that thread expressed that sentiment. I believe that you really chose the wrong analogy. You have made yourself appear to be of shallow values by admitting you would spend 98K on a freakin car, and inviting those who didn't like it to "bite you." Well to each his own. I really do not wish to pursue this because I do like the fact that 99% of my posts have been friendly, positive, supportive, calm, etc. etc. I DON'T like coming across as judgmental but this has brought out the worst in me.

103. you might...
try reading a post above where I talk about my volunteer experience with dying AIDS patients, serving as a clinic escort at three different abortion clinics, etc. etc.

And yes... I've given loads of $$ to aids charities, planned parenthood, and the ACLU.

If you read the whole thread before getting insulting, you might've learned that I was making a specific point. Not to boast about my car, but to show that making snap judgments about people you don't know based on one fact is a poor way to live.

Good luck to you.

Mmmmmmmmmmm.......Supercharged pleasure with the bonnet louvres, the special grill and the funky exhausts?

To be a true Brit, you've got to be able to spot the difference between an XK-8 and an XK-R at 100 paces!

And remember - JAG-YOO-UR....repeat after me.....JAG-YOO-UR.

Thank you.

yeah, I play that game all the time. It seems 98% of the XK series out there are 8's. I saw a hard-top XKR for the very first time a few weeks ago.

It's the slight difference in the rear fin that let's us spot it while on the road. From the front it's much easier.

Due to low sales I imagine they have some kind of a deal going on now where they are offering a deal called something like A Plan for friends. Think I am allowed to have two friends for this year use my A Plan benefit. Not sure if it will be extended beyond this year? But I saved over 3 grand on a 37,000 dollar Explorer with the plan right off the top. No bargaing, no arguing, no nothing. Just hand them the papers and they tell you what the price is. I would imagine for a Jag, it would be up near 6 or 7 thousand dollars off? PM me if you are considering getting a new one and want me to check with my benefit rep about it.

148. see, some American Dreams involve other things
besides "I got mine". Were $98,000 cars mention in MLK's speach? Dream big. A simple story that I like is Christopher Pike's Spooksville #9 The Wishing Stone. Three of the kids wish for money and things, and one wishes for galactic peace. Now that's a big dream. "If I had one wish" covers the same theme too where a teenage boy "trades his brother for a porsche" through a magical token. His family has more money, but less love.
Of course I have a laptop, a desktop, a DVD playa, about 150 CDs, and so on, but some things are just way over the top - things like $600 dinners and $98,000 cars and "bite me" attitudes.

You feel the same way about your Jag as I do about my Escort (the car not the date... LOL). I just paid it off after four years of hard work, but everytime I turn the key it's like I just started it for the first time.

Cars have this weird effect on people don't you think?

As for the theme of the thread, I got it and I appreciate you taking some of the heat off of Mr. Pitt.

If and when I need to replace my beloved Escort I am thinking about a Prius or a Honda Insight. I drove an old XJ12 that a friend restored some years back and it was wonderful, though I thought a bit squishy in the turns. That same friend also restored an old Maserati Merak that just rocked my socks.

Actually, cars have never been a big "thing" for me. I never understood luxury cars and why people lusted after them. Until I bought my jag.

oh.... my... god. I finally understood what the deal was. I had owned a Mustang (loved it) and a Sebring (crap) before the jag and it was an amazing difference. My commute took me over Highway 17 in California... a windy mountain road... twice a day. And the way this car handled it was just leaps and bounds above anything else I'd driven. The handling... the response... the acceleration.... good lord, I almost felt like a straight man! :)

Yeah, XJ series are built for comfort more than performance. But they're all beautiful!

Driving your car sexually frustrated you? I kid...

I've fallen into the drive only when necessary mindset now, and it seems to work for me. For years I commuted, college first then for work, now for me a luxury is pushing my lawn mower or weeding the vegetable garden.

I had to commute an hour and change each way to work in Portsmouth, NH up Rt 101 (formerly known as Deathrace 2000). Although I enjoyed the scenery and the music (the one option I financed as a disc changer) I found myself tired of the drive after a year or so.

When I lived in the UK I absolutely loved train travel. It's a shame we don't have the railway infrastructure here because I would have LOVED making my commute on the rails.

Ahhh trains...

I know, this is sort of going nowhere, but thinking about trains made me whistful. Go figure.

love 'em.

When I lived in San Francisco, I commuted down to Silicon Valley via train. Loved it!

I did a fair amount of business travel to Amsterdam, and thoroughly enjoyed the train. Europe really has it right. Of course... they don't have the sprawl we have in the US. Our cities are just so much further apart....

But anyway.... I, too, am wistful for trains. The sound... the rocking.... the chance to look out a window on your commute... sigh.

130. Another thought....
I bought the Jag largely because I had a hellacious commute over a windy mounty road and then into thick, silicon valley traffic.

I've been unemployed now since January. And now all my friends tease me because it's impossible to get me over the hill. My life without a commute has been bliss. My work was stressful, but my commute was probably 3 times worse.

Now I use my motorcycle for short trips around town, my "practical" car (a subaru wagon) for trips to the store and such, and save the jag for long trips or recreational drives up and down the California coast.

if that might explain. I breathe the same air as you. I drive a Dodge Neon, best I can do right now. I have put less than 3k miles on it in the last 5 months. Gonna buy a Prius in few months when I get my new job. If this guy can spend 4 times the money on a car with less fuel and environmental efficiency.... why should I respect him... He's harming my (OUR) environment, voluntarily.

And btw. The oil deposits are going to run out by 2050, so the child argument wont last too long.

133. ok...
I don't know where you live, but I'm in California. We have pretty restrictive laws on emissions. I think they're the most restrictive in the country. So I don't think your Neon is necessarily less polluting than my Jaguar.

And the child argument is not just about oil It's about EVERYTHING. It's about ALL the resources a human uses in a lifetime. Plus the resources that human's children use... and the resources those children's children use.... ad infinitum.

If you think I'm harming the environment voluntarily, then why don't you attack people with children? Why don't you attack fishermen? Our oceans are being depleted of large fish. Why don't you attack the French for having the greatest reliability on nuclear power than any other country? I'm a gay man who will never father a child: I recycle. I support (both financially and with my efforts) good, sound, ecological causes. I participate in ocean clean-ups as a concerned SCUBA diver. I vote for those who will protect the environment.

I ask for your respect only because I'm a fellow human being with good intentions a good heart and a sincere desire to discuss things amicably.

167. Not to be a snot
But you're going to contribute mightily to the landfill when you get rid of the Neon, to say nothing of all the materials and usage associated with getting a new car.

I'm a big fan of the Prius or the Insight, but if you've got a car already, getting another one that gets better gas mileage is a losing proposition, pollution-wise, unless you're going to live in the 200 year plus range.

Sorry, but that's the logical end of the argument.

you see it's like this:

My micropenis was the cause of incredible pain and anti-socialism. Due to my shame about the microscopic size of my manhood, I decided to DESTROY those who laughed at me in the locker room - that is, the big-dicked, low-hanging sons of the elite. Yes... that's right... it was the offspring of the secret rich cabal that rules us all that waved their giant weenies in my face and made me hunger to be like them. Absent the possibilitiy of genuine penis enlargement (though lord knows, I tried repeatedly with multiple operations to extend my pathetic member), I was forced to forego my REAL aspiration of possessing a magnificent cock and was forced to settle for 370 horsepower and and a 5-disc changer.

So far it's working out OK.

150. What a crazy thread!
Interesting the kind of "baggage" people needlessly carry with themselves.

I've been at both ends of the spectrum - days when I was so poor I didn't own a pot to piss in and times sitting pretty fat and sassy. I worked my ASS off and my last 2 cars have been nice cars. (Well, not 98K!!) But I've never felt the LEAST bit ostentatious about it.

And during the times of financial hardship I never felt any resentment toward those with greater means either. Good grief! The resentful reaction seen here really has to come from how people feel about themselves and their own life circumstances I imagine. I don't even hold that against them - I just make the observation.

Well, you seem like a delightful person Dookus. And, I'm sorry you have a small penis. :D

The other guy says "Then why don't you diet?"

The fat man replies "Dye it?! Christ, what color is it now?!"
