Anyone watching the Author Call-in on CSPAN2?
Doris Kearns Goodwin

Some great comments on the current state of affairs, and lots US History.

She just told a great story about Lincoln’s legacy. Tolstoy was educating ‘barbarians’ from North Caucasus about the great men of the world. They wanted to know about Lincoln, 'The man with the voice of thunder, who laughs like a sunset’. He was astonished that they had ever heard of Lincoln.

Now, more than 40 years after his assassination, in a faraway land, the mere mention of his name brought joyous tears to peasants craving a humble hero. ''Lincoln was a humanitarian as broad as the world," Tolstoy concluded. ''He was bigger than his country -- bigger than all the Presidents together."

In Depth: Doris Kearns Goodwin

Author and historian Doris Kearns Goodwin will be our guest for In Depth on November 6th. Over the span of three decades, Ms. Goodwin has written about such political figures as Lyndon Johnson, the Kennedys, FDR and Eleanor Roosevelt, and, most recently, Abraham Lincoln. Her books include: "Lyndon Johnson & the American Dream" (1977), "The Fitzgeralds & The Kennedys" (1987), the Pulitzer Prize-winning "No Ordinary Time: Franklin and Eleanor Roosevelt: The American Homefront During World War II" (1994), and "Wait Till Next Year: A Memoir" (1997). Prior to writing her own books, Ms. Goodwin assisted ex-president Lyndon Johnson with his 1971 memoir, "The Vantage Point." Her latest book, "Team of Rivals: The Political Genius of Abraham Lincoln," will be published in October.

I've sent an e-mail asking what she thinks of the new information that the Gulf of Tonkin Incident was false, and how does that compare to our knowledge that we were lied into Iraq, just like we were lied into Vietnam.

1. Heard her on NPR and she was The Daily Show. Lincoln put the four
men who ran against him for the presidential nomination in his cabinet. They all came from wealthier and better educated backgrounds than he did, but he won the nomination, and then proceeded to put them into his administration. A true statesman. None of those left around here these days.

3. She also thought Bush was the greatest thing since God
She was ecstatic when Bush got the presidency. Maybe she has second thoughts now but I can't forget her face when Bush "won" She had the look that many of Hitlers female followers had. We have all seen that!

$$ and reputation. She implied it was a terrible "oversight" and ultimately caused her to pull the book.
She said she made sure that nothing of that ilk happened in this book.

9. Doris is no RW'er. She does seem like an optimist and a person who
probably hoped for the best.

I have seen her quite a bit and I certainly don't think that is an accurate description of her.

However, I have seen that exited, hopeful look on her face before - I think that is just part of her personality, not necessarily an endorsement of Bush.

I don't think there is any way she voted for Bush in either 2000 or 2004.

4. Talking about how losing his son to Typhoid during the war...
made him connect personally to the effects of war on the people, and he felt great pain for his decisions.
