Has Gannett News embargoed Hinchey's charges against Rove?
Edited on Tue Feb-22-05 10:19 PM by paineinthearse
The Ithica (NY) Journal, a Gannett (USA Today) paper, is the only MSM outlet that is giving any coverage of U.S. Rep. Maurice Hinchey, D-22nd District speculation about "alleged media manipulation by the Bush administration" and "White House Deputy Chief of Staff Karl Rove provided CBS both the fraudulent and official documents."

The remarks were made at the representative's weekend town hall meeting in Ithica.

The initial newspaper report is:

Hinchey remarks draw fire - Representative has 'theory' of White House manipulation
JODY ROSELLE
Ithica Journal Staff
http://www.theithacajournal.com/news/stories/20050222/localnews/2014019.html

The story, including audio and transcripts, are all over the blogs. The first to break the story was "Little Green Footballs" - http://littlegreenfootballs.com/weblog/?entry=14785

DU has two:

Hinchey sees hand of Rove (Karl blamed for CBS leak) - http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_topic&forum=102&topic_id=1256504#1256819

Rep. Hinchey charges Rove planted false AWOL docs...will media do its job? - http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=104x3157806

Good reporting, Ms. Roselle, but why is Gannett not spreading your story to other outlets?

I decided to contact her, here is the email exchage (note, as the issue is suspected MSM news suppression, I have been cc'ing Danny Schecter of MEDIACHANNEL.ORG):

Hinchey remarks draw fire
Ithaca Journal, NY - 4 hours ago
US Rep. Maurice Hinchey, D-22nd District, stepped into hot water with remarks made during a public forum about Social Security Saturday at the Town of Ithaca ...

Good job!!!! I have one question.

Q. The IJ is part of the Gannett chain (USA Today). Why have no other outlets picked this up in 4 hours? Please tell me more how the Gannett system works.

We in Democratic Underground will not let this be swept aside / quashed. We are watching and spreading the word.

Dear Mr. X:

The Gannett Corporation is a publicly-traded corporation. The information you seek can be found at www.gannett.com. In terms of the other media outlets, The Times Herald Record farther upstate apparently wrote something about the remarks. I cannot explain why other mainstream media outlets did not choose to report on this story. I’m merely a reporter.

3. MY REPLY TO HER REPLY:

...and you are doing a great job, I read your follow-up story.

My question is specifically directed at Gannett. When I Google news your lead line "Maurice Hinchey, D-22nd District, stepped into hot water with remarks made during a public forum about Social Security Saturday at the Town of Ithaca Hall..." the only result I get is yours.

I am a veteran Google news user. When I search other articles written by small city papers, they are in time picked up by other outlets, especially within the company "family". I know this works the other way; I have read Gannett editorials in what appear to be "home town" papers and written by "local" editors, but in fact are written by Gannett headquarters.

If you see "your" story picked up by other Gannett outlets, please let me know. I suspect it has been embargoed. Please prove me wrong.

In the interest of media fairness, I am copying Danny Schecter of MediaChannel.org

Regards,

15. I posted this yesterday in GDP about gannett news and Terry Eberle
Not sure if this has been asked before? but here is the link and a snippet on this guy Terry Eberle.

http://www.floridatoday.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/...

Terry Eberle is the executive editor of Florida Today.
He grew up in Coral Gables, and has ink in his blood - his father was general manager of the now-closed Miami News.

Eberle joined the Gannett Company Inc. on graduation from the University of Dayton. He has served as vice president and editor of The Indianapolis Star, and executive editor at The News-Press in Fort Myers. He also has worked at newspapers in West Virginia, Louisiana and Pennsylvania, as well as at USA Today.

In his 32 years as a journalist, he was honored twice as one of the top 10 editors of the Gannett Co., Inc., which owns Florida Today, USA Today and 97 other newspapers nationwide.

Since his arrival at Florida Today in January 2003, Eberle has led a reexamination of the newspaper's news coverage and launched a redesign of the newspaper that was unveiled to readers in early February 2004.

He also writes a twice-monthly editorial page column that appears on Sundays to talk to readers about the newspaper and what's going on in the newsroom.

Jody Roselle of Gannett's ITHICA JOURNAL has written at least one piece about Rep. Hinchey's charge that Karl Rove is manipulating the media.

(I think there is a second, but it was basically a re-write of this one).

Gannett has not picked-up on this. I suspect a news embargo.

Pick up the phone, call your local Gannett editor, provide information about the Roselle story, ask if they are aware of the national implications, and ask them to print the story. If they balk, ask why.

7. 2/23 exchange
This is getting good. I had another cordial exchange with ms. Roselle and have raised the issue of Gannett's suppression to the managing editor of the Ithica Journal, Bruce Estes

I’m sorry but story movement among Gannett “family” newspapers is not part of my job description – I’m reporter which means I’m at one of the lower rungs of the ladder with no editorial content control. Sorry I can’t be of more help.

Ms Roselle,

From the several pieces you have written on the matter of the Rove allogateion and social security, I think you are doing a teriffic job of grass-roots journalism. The issue I have is with the parent organization's decision to keep this at the local level; Rep. Hinchey has recently been on CNN discussing the matter, and Fox had 4 peers discussing it as well.

I have your editor's name and contact info from the Gannett website and will request that your stories be given the wider audience they deserve.

Mr Estes:

Over the past couple of days, I have been complementing Ms Roselle on her coverage of the Rep. Hinchey charge that Karl Rove is responsible for certain political actions. See

Hinchey remarks draw fire
Ithaca Journal, NY - Feb 22, 2005
Maurice Hinchey, D-22nd District, stepped into hot water with remarks made during a public forum about Social Security Saturday at the Town of Ithaca Hall. ...

I have been searching for additional information using Google News and have found none save very local and blog coverage. Given the nature of the charges, I am astounded that Gannett has not given Ms. Roselle greater exposure in the sister outlets and USA Today. Can you tell me the reason for this lack of coverage and if Gannett has plans to give her story the exposure it deserves?

Respectfully,

9. Hinchey was on Vannity & Colmes tonight.
I picked up on it as they were finishing their "discussion". Sean Vannity was (in his usual polished, aristocratic way) engaging Hinchey in a bet in which Hinchey was to "buy me dinner and extend an apology to Mr. Rove" if it turned out not to be true.

Whereas if (when) it turned out to be true, Vannity was to buy Hinchey dinner. But nothing was mentioned about an apology from Sean in that event.

Actually Sean needs to apologize to the entire population for the last 7-8 years (or however long he's been on the air).

I think one or two terms need to be added to these jovial fellows' bets: if it turns out to be true that the trail of the false AWOL documents does indeed lead to Fat Karl, then as part of the bet, Fat Karl should pay double for his next date with Jeffy-Jim Gannon-Guckert.
