'I saw papers that show US knew al-Qa'ida would attack cities with aeroplanes'
Whistleblower the White House wants to silence speaks to The Independent
By Andrew Buncombe in Washington
02 April 2004

A former translator for the FBI with top-secret security clearance says she has provided information to the panel investigating the 11 September attacks which proves senior officials knew of al-Qa'ida's plans to attack the US with aircraft months before the strikes happened.

She said the claim by the National Security Adviser, Condoleezza Rice, that there was no such information was "an outrageous lie".

Sibel Edmonds said she spent more than three hours in a closed session with the commission's investigators providing information that was circulating within the FBI in the spring and summer of 2001 suggesting that an attack using aircraft was just months away and the terrorists were in place. The Bush administration, meanwhile, has sought to silence her and has obtained a gagging order from a court by citing the rarely used "state secrets privilege".

She told The Independent yesterday: "I gave the commission details of specific investigation files, the specific dates, specific target information, specific managers in charge of the investigation. I gave them everything so that they could go back and follow up. This is not hearsay. These are things that are documented. These things can be established very easily."

23. Was in today's WSJ: Kamikaze Terrorism Wasn't a New Idea
WASHINGTON -- Despite official assertions that the U.S. had little reason to suspect before Sept. 11 that airliners would be used as weapons, there is new evidence that the federal government had on several earlier occasions taken elaborate, secret measures to protect special events from just such an attack.

(snip)

In the aftermath of those attacks, Bush administration officials have said they received no intelligence warning of such a tactic. "I don't think anybody could have predicted that these people would take an airplane and slam it into the World Trade Center, take another one and slam it into the Pentagon, that they would try to use an airplane as a missile," National Security Adviser Condoleezza Rice said in a May 2002 news briefing.

Yet on several occasions starting in the mid-1990s, U.S. intelligence agencies had passed on information concerning such a possibility, including early plans by al Qaeda officials to use passenger jets as kamikaze weapons, according to records and current and former government officials.

(snip)

In addition, the plan was used for Mr. Clinton's second inauguration in 1997, the North Atlantic Treaty Organization's 50th anniversary celebration in Washington in 1999, the Republican and Democratic conventions in 2000 and the Bush inauguration in 2001, according to former White House officials and Mr. Clarke's book. The plan's use for designated "National Security Special Events" was made official in a classified portion of a "presidential decision directive" that Mr. Clinton signed in 1998. Use of the plan at these events wasn't publicized, and officials were forbidden to talk about it.

(snip)

The possibility of terrorists using hijacked jets against major U.S. buildings had been raised in a public federal-government report in 1999 on terrorist threats facing the U.S. Prepared by the federal-research division of the Library of Congress, it warned: "Suicide bomber(s) belonging to al Qaeda's Martyrdom Battalion could crash-land an aircraft packed with high explosives into the Pentagon, the headquarters of the Central Intelligence Agency, or the White House." The report, referring to an al Qaeda leader captured in 1995, added that "Ramzi Yousef had planned to do this against the CIA headquarters." Bush administration officials have said publicly that they weren't aware of the report before Sept. 11. But a stream of intelligence beginning in 1995, which reached the White House, did indicate that terrorists were plotting attacks using hijacked jets.

13. Satisfaction v. Futility - a subjective rant.
yes, I suspect a hangout operation is in progress.

First let me say this: there's just too much thats gone south for the BFEE for them to be able to keep everything under wraps. And so we're starting to see a strategy, again using the corporate media, in which blame can be assessed against the BFEE. But not for the full and terrible expanse of their treason against the United States of America. The appearance of justice and transparency will be presented to placate the grumbling populous.

That being said...it feels DAMN GOOD to see this shit coming out into the light of day, after 3 years of scraping and digging and tinfoil jumpsuits.

We cannot think we're winning, cause the deck is so stacked against democracy. We've got to keep pushing, keep talking, keep shouting, marching writing singing dancing fighting struggling loving...

But tonight? fuckit, I'm gonna indulge myself in a little sense of satisfaction.

and tomorrow? let's go get these fucking bastards and take our Nation back.

17. 'US knew al-Qaeda planned aircraft attacks' - IOL
London - United States officials knew months before September 11, 2001, that the al-Qaeda network planned to use planes to commit a terrorist attack, according to a former FBI translator interviewed by a British newspaper on Friday.

Sibel Edmonds told the Independent daily that a claim by US President George Bush's national security advisor Condoleezza Rice that there had been no such warnings was "an outrageous lie".

The former translator with the Federal Bureau of Investigation said that she has provided information about her claims to a US commission investigating the September 11 attacks.

19. Been waiting and wondering when the hell this would break wide open;
it had been talked about some time ago, and I remember hearing about documents that specifically talked about this kind of threat (no, Chimpy, I don't think they specifically said New York on September 11th, you fucking transparent little imbecile, so don't give us that line of shit)
YES the US had the information; YES the dots could have and should have been connected; YES BushCo is culpable, never mind 'we only had 8 months,' they HAD THE INTELLIGENCE, they just didn't have the intelligence, if you know what I mean....too busy planning a grudge match with Iraq and trying to do anything but what Clinton did, the juveniles. 20. Finally! CHECKOUT DEMOCRACYNOW.ORG!
I was wondering when someone might bring this up.
Democracy now had an interview With Sibel Edmonds just the other day.
I highly reccomend all, and I do mean ALL DUers, go and check out this story at democracynow.org. This is not some 45 second sound bite either, this is a 1/2hour phone interview.

I have not heard a peep of her name on CNN, CNBC, FOXNews, nor any other news organization. I am hoping this is the start of something that could break the story wide open.

What is even more outrageous is that in the Democracy Now interview
Mrs. Edmonds stated that her FBI superiors told her and other translators NOT to translate the documents so they would build up to a backlog. They then could go lobby congress for more cash and use this translating backlog as an excuse. She has been desparate to get her story out. The 9/11 commission is her last hope.

Is Condi aware of the Sibel Edmonds testimony to the 911 commission? Accordingly, your saying that Condi is aware of Sibel Edmond's testimony to the 911 hearing that was taken behind closed doors. Is Condi privileged to all closed-door testimony?

That is what I was trying to refer to in a previous post.

I apologize for my ignorance.

41. I wouldn't think Rice is privileged to closed-door testimony,
but having seen how the commission works, it wouldn't surprise me if she receives a back-channel heads up on areas of inquiry to help her prepare.

It'll be interesting to watch what, if anything, the commission does with Edmonds testimony now it's no longer a closed-door secret. Will they follow up on it, or remain silent?

because I'm sure more information, including names and places were given to the 911 Commission that wasn't revealed in the News of Edmonds testimony. And I'm sure that anyone, such as Thomas Kean, with friends like Henry Kissinger, would easily channel the needed information to the White House.

Thanks for your response.

Point in the fall of Bush. UNder oath Condi will have to verify the existence of documents exposed by Edmonds. If she lies she goes to jail.

Is she willing to go to jail for Bush and Cheney?

Bush and Cheney together before the 911 commission was done to prevent a divide and create conflicting stories. Dick will answer the questions. Bush will say nothing.

Condi lied. Bush lied.

They Knew highjackings were going to happen and they knew a horrible terrorist attack would occur. They LET IT HAPPEN ON PURPOSE to allow the neocon agenda to be fully realized.

So now they have to stay together to keep from conflicting each other version of the lies.

This seemed quite evident last week with Condi. More proof they were all in on it :kick:

WASHINGTON, April 2 (UPI) -- The U.S. administration knew of al-Qaida plans to target buildings with planes months before the attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, a former FBI translator claims.

http://washingtontimes.com/upi-breaking/20040402-064359-3845r.htm

The floodgates have truly opened. I requested Google news alerts for "Sibel Edmonds" last week after the Flocco story, and barely a bite. Until now. Though apart from this UPI item, it's almost all non-US outlets.

9/11 Commission:
Coverage From American Progress

More on the 9/11 Commission

As most of America slept early last Sunday morning, the Bush administration hustled and bustled to prepare for the Sunday morning talk shows – among others Colin Powell was appearing on "Face the Nation" and Donald Rumsfeld was booked on "Fox News Sunday." Condoleezza Rice was not scheduled to appear until prime time, when she would make a star appearance on CBS' "60 Minutes" – the last in a long line of media appearances that caused 9/11 Commissioner Richard Ben Veniste to quip that "Condi Rice has appeared everywhere but at my local Starbucks."

Well, others in the Bush administration did, apparently, make an appearance at the local Starbucks. And as the Washington Post reports today, one of them – obviously readying himself to prep Defense Secretary Rumsfeld – left his notes on the table. Talking points, hand-written notes on spin tactics that reveal the White House was worried about former Bush adviser Richard Clarke's charges, and a hand-drawn map to the Secretary's house were found by a resident of DuPont Circle, who made them available to the Center for American Progress. The name of said resident is being withheld at his request, as he fears that he may be accused on national television of being "disgruntled."

46. US 'knew' air attack coming - News24
London - US officials knew months before September 11, 2001 that Osama bin Laden's al-Qaeda network was planning to use aircraft to carry out a terrorist attack, a former FBI translator has alleged.

Sibel Edmonds told the Independent newspaper, in an interview published on Friday, that a claim by US President George W Bush's national security advisor Condoleezza Rice that there had been no such warnings was "an outrageous lie".

The former translator with the US Federal Bureau of Investigation said that she had discussed her claims during a three-hour closed-door session with a US commission looking into the September 11 attacks.

'not' publishing 'relevant' and 'pertinent' information? This isn't a 'call' issue. This is failure to perform responsibilities.

56. OK. NOW explain the Rowley/Moussaoui incident...
The significance of Condi’s lie "We received no intelligence that terrorists were preparing to attack the homeland using airplanes as missiles" is hard to overstate. To understand why, we need to remember the context of that lie.

In May, 2002 FBI whistleblower Coleen Rowley’s memo to Robert Mueller was published. In it, we learned the FBI headquarters went out of their way to prevent a FISA to be issued so that agents in Minnesota could examine a laptop which was later found to contain information about the 9/11 hijackers. The full memo is here:
http://www.time.com/time/covers/1101020603/memo.html

Here’s one clip from the memo:

For example, at one point, the Supervisory Special Agent at FBIHQ posited that the French information could be worthless because it only identified Zacarias Moussaoui by name and he, the SSA, didn't know how many people by that name existed in France. A Minneapolis agent attempted to surmount that problem by quickly phoning the FBI's legal Attache (Legat) in Paris, France, so that a check could be made of the French telephone directories. Although the Legat in France did not have access to all of the French telephone directories, he was able to quickly ascertain that there was only one listed in the Paris directory. It is not known if this sufficiently answered the question, for the SSA continued to find new reasons to stall.

Rowley did, however, give her bosses an out. Here’s that clip:

It's quite conceivable that many of the HQ personnel who so vigorously disputed Moussaoui's ability/predisposition to fly a plane into a building were simply unaware of all the various incidents and reports worldwide of Al Qaeda terrorists attempting or plotting to do so.

*By the way, just in the event you did not know, let me furnish you the Webster's definition of "careerism - - the policy or practice of advancing one's career often at the cost of one's integrity". Maybe that sums up the whole problem!

Of course, that was how the matter was resolved:

1.) Mueller promised to make sure “careerism” would never again impede a terrorist investigation.
2.) Condi Rice told the world that no one in the Bush Administration expected terrorists to use plane as weapons.

But now, we learn that, for months, the CIA director is briefing Bush and his staff with an urgency described as “having his hair on fire” warning that an attack was imminent. And from Clarke we have learned that protecting key targets from “airliners as missiles” was SOP. Now, can you imagine how different May, 2002 would have been had all this been

Did this man predict Sept. 11?
Strange story of a jailed spy unfolds in Toronto court
Nick Pron
Staff Reporter, Toronto Star,

While jet fighters drop bombs on Afghanistan in the wake of the World Trade Center tragedy and FBI agents search for the source of anthrax letters, an incredible tale has been unfolding in a Toronto courtroom.

It draws together the threads of a narrative some describe as "stunning and fantastic," while others wonder if it isn't just the ravings of a lunatic.

The man telling the tale in sworn court affidavits is Delmart Edward Vreeland, who faces credit fraud charges in Canada and in the United States, where officials are attempting to extradite him.

The 35-year-old American claims to be a lieutenant in a U.S. Navy intelligence unit - a spy who says he knew in advance about the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.

In his affidavit, he says he tried to warn Canadian intelligence about possible terrorist attacks on New York and the Pentagon, along with targets in Ottawa and Toronto, but was written off as a petty criminal.

So he wrote the warning on a piece of paper, sealed it in an envelope, and handed it to jail guards a month before the attacks. They opened the letter Sept. 14 and immediately forwarded the information to Ottawa.

His lawyers, Rocco Galati and Paul Slansky, are fighting extradition, telling the court he could face treason charges and the death penalty in the U.S.

In the first stage of hearings, federal prosecutor Kevin Wilson yesterday told Mr. Justice Archie Campbell of the Superior Court of Justice that he was skeptical of Vreeland's claims.

"Is his story possible? I can't go so far as to say it's not possible, but it's not plausible," Wilson said.

The prosecutor said he has seen no evidence to back Vreeland's claim that Canadian embassy official Marc Bastien was murdered in Moscow in December. Canadian officials said the 35-year-old computer specialist died of natural causes.

So, who is Delmart Edward Joseph Michael Vreeland II?

According to court documents, Vreeland was 18 when he enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1984.

Two years later, Vreeland says in his affidavit, he joined a special unit investigating drug smuggling into the U.S. by naval personnel. But the navy says Vreeland was "unsatisfactorily discharged" in 1986.

Vreeland also claims he gathered information on a crime family in Detroit and testified against them in 1998.

Late last year, he says, he came to Canada to help smuggle Russian military secrets out of Moscow, including Russia's plan to counter the American "Star Wars" missile defence system. While in Moscow, Vreeland says, he met Bastien.

Vreeland was arrested by a police fugitive squad nine months ago. While in Toronto (Don) Jail, he met Nestor Fonseca, who was facing drug smuggling charges and extradition to the U.S. The court documents say Fonseca allegedly told Vreeland of his plans to kill a Toronto judge and others. Fonseca was charged with counselling to commit murder.

Galati and Slansky said in the documents that Vreeland should be put into the witness protection program in Canada because he is the main witness against Fonseca.

Galati writes in one document: "Neither myself, nor Mr. Slansky ... have seen anything as incomprehensibly frustrating, inexplicable and irresponsibly absurd ... as the RCMP's position that they are not interested in reviewing Mr. Vreeland's information."

It would appear, Galati says in the brief, that the Canadian and American governments have written Vreeland off as a "nut case," which he says is a "patently absurd conclusion."

62. Edmonds' naming other prominent targets reminded me of Vreeland's
note, and the message "Let one happen, stop the rest."

Important follow up in The Toronto Star last December: "Post-9/11, this doesn't seem all that weird":

January, 2002. That's when Quebec coroner Line Duchesne concluded that Bastien, described as an information systems handler, had indeed been poisoned — probably by someone who slipped a concentrated anti-schizophrenic drug into his drink in a Moscow bar.

Vreeland's credibility suddenly shot up.

But eight months later, while out on bail awaiting an extradition hearing, he just disappeared.

At the time, Slansky told the court he had gone to Vreeland's apartment to pick him up but found it ransacked, with key evidence related to his client's 9/11 claims missing.

The point is things are getting close to bone. When you get Merle Haggard out calling * a flip flopping coward something of a breach is occurring somewhere (just funnin, and I don't drink white lightning or suck up on the chronic) For those folks that might be getting their hopes on that upcoming testimony. you should be aware there was never any impartiality to be given here. The thing was stacked a long time ago, we were just lucky to get a guy like Clarke to go on like he did.

I have have to post this story though, I know most are aware of it, but it has my favorite guy, Henry, so with out more ado

Kissinger's Back...As 9/11 Truth-Seeker
11/27/2002 @ 4:19pm
(snip)
A fellow who has coddled state-sponsored terrorism has been put in charge of this terrorism investigation. A proven liar has been assigned the task of finding the truth. By the way, in 1976, when Kissinger was secretary of state, he was informed by his chief aide for Latin America that South American military regimes were intending to use Operation Condor "to find and kill" political opponents. Kissinger quickly dispatched a cable instructing US ambassadors in the Condor countries to note Washington's "deep concern." But it seems no such warnings were actually conveyed. And a month later, this order was rescinded. The next day, Letelier and Moffit were murdered. (Peter Kornbluh and journalist John Dinges recently chronicled this sad Kissinger episode in The Washington Post.) Kissinger's State Department had not responded with the force needed to thwart the official terrorism of its friends in South America. Perhaps this provides Kissinger experience useful for examining the government's failure to prevent more recent acts of terrorism.

Other qualifications for the job, as Bush and Vice President Dick Cheney might see it? A leaks-obsessed Kissinger, when he served as Nixon's national security adviser, wiretapped his own staff. (One of his targets, Morton Halperin, sued and eventually won an apology.) And when he left office, Kissinger took tens of thousands of pages of documents--created by government employees on government time--and treated them as his personal records, using them for his own memoirs and keeping the material for years from the prying eyes of historians and journalists. He and the Bush-Cheney White House agree on open government: the less the better.

Remember, the White House was never keen on setting up an independent commission that would answer to the public. Cheney at one point reportedly intervened to block a compromise that had been painstakingly worked out in Congress regarding the composition and rules of the commission. Finally, the White House said okay, as long as it could pick the chairman and subpoenas would only be issued with the support of at least six of the commission's ten members. With Kissinger in control, the secret-keepers of the White House--who already have succeeded in preventing the House and Senate intelligence committees' investigation of 9/ll from releasing embarrassing and uncomfortable information--will have little reason to fear.

The Bush-Cheney administration has been a rehab center for tainted Republicans. Retired Admiral John Poindexter, a leading Iran-contra player, was placed in charge of a sensitive, high-tech, Pentagon intelligence-gathering operation aimed at reviewing massive amounts of individual personal data in order to uncover possible terrorists. Elliott Abrams, who pled guilty to lying to Congress in the Iran-contra scandal, was warmly embraced and handed a staff position in Bush's National Security Council. But the Kissinger selection is the most outrageous of these acts of compassion and forgiveness. It is a move of defiance and hubris.

(snip)
(snip)

With Kissinger's appointment, Bush has rendered the independent commission a sham. Democrats should have immediately announced they would refuse to fill their allotted five slots. But after Bush picked Kissinger, the Democrats tapped former Democratic Senator George Mitchell to be vice-chairman of the panel, signaling that Kissinger was fine by them. How unfortunate. The public would be better served and the victims of 9/11 better honored by no commission rather than one headed by Kissinger.
(snip)

Is Henry Kissinger a war criminal, fascist or just misunderstood
