PITTSBURGH, Pennsylvania (AP) -- Vice President Dick Cheney portrayed President Bush and himself as champions of the Second Amendment -- and Democratic candidate John Kerry as a potential threat to gun owners -- in a speech at the National Rifle Association's 133rd annual convention Saturday.

"John Kerry's approach to the Second Amendment has been to regulate, regulate and then regulate some more," Cheney said, citing votes against legislation that would protect gun makers from lawsuits and in favor of allowing federal authorities to randomly inspect gun dealers without notice.

Cheney lauded the NRA for its safety programs and said the best way to prevent gun crimes was to enforce existing laws. Federal prosecutions of crimes committed with guns increased 68 percent under President Bush, he told the crowd.

First: Kerry needs to push Child deaths from loose guns.

Second: The Progressives need to start a DEMOCRATIC NRA and pull the SANE gun users away from the pack of scary assholes.

I've been saying this for years. It's simple and it would work.

I'd join, and here's the mantra, "I'm a Liberal and I'm loaded for bear. But I know that you don't hunt with an automatic rifle, and I'm for keeping kids safe from guns in the household. Not too many people I know who hunt with automatic rifles either, but I don't think they should be illegal to own. Besides, there hasn't been much problem with them anyway, as they have been strictly regulated since 1934.

10. Lot's of people hunt with

semi-automatic rifles. Since lots of full auto rifles are select fire, there's really nothing stopping lots of them from being effective hunting rifles either. As was mentioned below here, full-auto weapons have been regulated pretty heavily since 1934 and all that regulation has really inflated the prices. I doubt anyone is going to traipse through the woods with a $10,000 machine gun to hunt when they could do it just as effectively with a $400 semi-auto rifle.

All Democrats would have to do is actively support the 2nd Amendment and there would be no need for a "Democratic NRA." Most Republicans give only token support for it anyway, so it's an issue that can easily be stolen away from them. In fact, I am of the belief that if all Democrats adopted this stance, we would never lose a national election again.

I love that image from Bowling for Columbine where Chuck Heston was in Denver just after Columbine holding one of those super long rifles over his head saying "From my cold, dead hands!".

Who gives a shit about Cheney and the NRA? We know they will vote for Bush but probably not as many or as enthusiastically as 2000. Kerry is hunter, was in the military, and many are just pissed off at Bush anyway.

Maybe Cheney can get on Limbaugh again to talk about guns <yawn>.
