Cheney portrays Kerry as threat to gun owners
Columbine dad turned away from convention

Cheney, center, accepts a rifle from
NRA President Kayne Robinson, right, and
NRA Vice President Wayne R. LaPierre
Saturday.

PITTSBURGH, Pennsylvania (AP) -- Vice President Dick Cheney portrayed President Bush and himself as champions of the Second Amendment -- and Democratic candidate John Kerry as a potential threat to gun owners -- in a speech at the National Rifle Association's 133rd annual convention Saturday.

"John Kerry's approach to the Second Amendment has been to regulate, regulate and then regulate some more," Cheney said, citing votes against legislation that would protect gun makers from lawsuits and in favor of allowing federal authorities to randomly inspect gun dealers without notice.

Cheney lauded the NRA for its safety programs and said the best way to prevent gun crimes was to enforce existing laws. Federal prosecutions of crimes committed with guns increased 68 percent under President Bush, he told the crowd.

23. Yup, amazing that the most controlling governance is doing this.
Typical. "They" (that would be the freon neocon imperialists) are doing another flip-flop deliverance of what they really seek,...power in their hands and nobody else's. SOOOOOO typical!!!!

3. Cheney is the terrorist's best friend.
Cheney and the NRA seek unrestricted access to guns which translates into unrestricted access for terrorists and psych cases as well as today's law-abiding citizen who may tomorrow be a terrorist or a psycho. Osama says thanks Unka Dickhead.

4. "Federal prosecutions of crimes commited with guns...
increased 68% under president bush"...I should hope so, since the crime rate has risen as well. People are getting desperate under the administrations economic "gains"!

A few more "gains" like this, and 35% of the country will be on bread lines...:(

When was the last time the national crime report came out,was it 2001?

6. This
from a "sportsman" who's had more than 400 helpless birds literally THROWN in front of his shotgun..

a real hero..

Two things here:

First: Kerry needs to push Child deaths from loose guns.

Second: The Progressives need to start a DEMOCRATIC NRA and pull the SANE gun users away from the pack of scary assholes.

I've been saying this for years. It's simple and it would work.

I'd join, and here's the mantra, "I'm a Liberal and I'm loaded for bear. But I know that you don't hunt with an automatic rifle, and I'm for keeping kids safe from guns in the household. No one wants to take your gun away from you, as a matter of fact, CHENEY AND BUSH are putting more gun owners in Jail than ever before."

:)

7. Ahem...
First: Kerry needs to push Child deaths from loose guns.

Not too many there. Isn't the accidental death rate from guns for those aged 0-14 at a record low right now???

But I know that you don't hunt with an automatic rifle

Not too many people I know who hunt with automatic rifles either, but I don't think they should be illegal to own. Besides, there hasn't been much problem with them anyway, as they have been strictly regulated since 1934.

Later,

9. The total number of accidental deaths
from guns including both adults in children is around 700-800 a year as I recall from the last time it was mentioned in the dungeon.

13. sorry
but I know better, my pal bought a freaking Chinese automatic rifle back in 1997 that would take out a whole neighborhood in about 15 minutes and as far as I know it was perfectly legal..

there are plenty of these things floating around at gun shows, remember, no one plugged any laws at these functions..

ain't biting.

21. Did your pal pay the $200 tax for it?
And undergo a background check complete with submission of fingerprints and photos?

If not, it was an illegal purchase.

By the way, has he gone out and committed any crimes with his "Chinese automatic rifle"?

10. Lot's of people hunt with
semi-automatic rifles. Since lots of full auto rifles are select fire, there's really nothing stopping lots of them from being effective hunting rifles either. As was mentioned below here, full-auto weapons have been regulated pretty heavily since 1934 and all that regulation has really inflated the prices. I doubt anyone is going to traipse through the woods with a $10,000 machine gun to hunt when they could do it just as effectively with a $400 semi-auto rifle.

15. those guns
are designed to slaughter humans, they are not designed to "hunt".. most of them leave nothing but feathers behind even with a single shot.

I'm not saying that people shouldn't have them, if they are sane, they have that right.. BUT, I get sick and tired of people pretending they are for hunting, they aren't.

17. Most people don't hunt birds with rifles.
As far as hunting deer or something, what's the difference between hunting a deer with a semi-auto Remington 7400, a semi-auto FAL, or a full auto FAL using only the semi-auto setting?

20. Dem NRA, that is a sane idea.
Because there seem to be so many gun freaks on d.u.

It doesn't seem to be a partisan issue.

BTW, I heard someone mention symbolman on Randi Rhodes the other day. Did you call in? They mentioned seventhson and d.u., too.

22. That wouldn't even be necessary
All Democrats would have to do is actively support the 2nd Amendment and there would be no need for a "Democratic NRA." Most Republicans give only token support for it anyway, so it's an issue that can easily be stolen away from them. In fact, I am of the belief that if all Democrats adopted this stance, we would never lose a national election again.

12. Did Dick say "From my cold, dead hands!"
I love that image from Bowling for Columbine where Chuck Heston was in Denver just after Columbine holding one of those super long rifles over his head saying "From my cold, dead hands!".

Who gives a shit about Cheney and the NRA? We know they will vote for Bush but probably not as many or as enthusiastically as 2000. Kerry is hunter, was in the military, and many are just pissed off at Bush anyway.

Maybe Cheney can get on Limbaugh again to talk about guns <yawn>.

14. I wish Kerry would just be blatantly honest about the Bush regime,...
Edited on Sun Apr-18-04 03:32 PM by Just Me
,...and tell the American people, once and for all, what the freon neocons seek: another Empire.

"They", the freon neocons, down-played their agenda from everyone as "they" invested in a COVERT "marketing" campaign to convince others into merely another wacko invention no less repulsive than the hitler regime,...

The world (humanity) is repulsed at another "imperialist" agenda. Hitler was enough,...and, we are just beginning to be fully informed about all the other "imperialist" agendas that have resulted in an incomprehensible loss of life across this globe,...which fully and shamefully included the full cooperation of the USA.

Of course, Kerry is buried in the political game. Which is why, no matter how contraversial he may be in these times,...I appreciate Nader's voice,...sprewing a truth that the political pawns are way too correct and fearful,...to do.

will be the FIRST ONES to take away these people's guns just as soon as they can swing it after they've created a proper empire and enough jack booted thugs.

Hitler did it, and these guys are cut of the same cloth.
