93. Follow the money!!! It costs him too much to work for the government!
He's not as "patriotic" or dedicated to fighting terrorism as Bush pretended. His company made and sold a boatload of stun guns to the Dept of Homeland security. Maybe they are the guns that caused the legal suits. I don't know.

124. He made 6 million on a taser (stun gun) company deal and was
supposedly trying to get a contract with Homeland Security for these same tasers. It's just one of those crooked, conflict of interest kind of things. Nothing big, but a Nannygate story is more palatable for public consumption I guess. But geez, it's not as if he tortured anybody or called the Geneva conventions quaint. Bernie should have just hung in there for awhile. People do much worse in the * administration and still get a pass.

kind of cash to buy shares? Seriously, and even though I know he was a thug for the Saudi Royal Family and a mule for Giuliani's Partnership (doing Gawd knows what), but regardless of what he did and earned, how may I ask did he get that kind of cash? You don't just get that kind of stock for doing nothing....what did he do?

75. When is the next full moon?
Been raining here so much I don't have a clue. But Snow is back because no one would take on the job. We may be in even more serious trouble if they have to keep going lower in the barrel to find people who will serve. But Kerik scared me. We may need Homeland (and that word offends me) security, but we certainly don't need a skinhead running it.

35. Medaire, Purdue Pharma, Entergy Nuclear NE and more:::
Maybe one of these???

Since May this year, Kerik has served on the board of MedAire, a Tempe, Ariz., company that provides a global medical network for travelers needing assistance and consultations for Americans living abroad who face an immediate security crisis.

~snip~

Kerik has played a key security consultant's role for a number of Kerik and Giuliani clients. Among them:

_Purdue Pharma, the company that makes the narcotic painkiller OxyContin. Kerik helped the company improve security at two manufacturing plants after it experienced employee theft and found that additional security measurers were needed for the highly regulated drug. Kerik worked to improve the capacity of safes to secure the product, upgrade camera surveillance and install other security measures.

_The Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of America, the drug industry association that opposes importation of medicine from Canada and elsewhere. Kerik visited ports, reviewed prescription drug Internet sites and helped prepare a report for the industry on dangers of importation. He told a government task force in April that allowing imports could invite terrorists to purchase drugs legally and use them in a biological attack

_Entergy Nuclear Northeast, operator of five nuclear power plants. Kerik and others helped ensure the plants were operated with state-of-the-art security.

That which allows the proletarian opportunist to rise so far and so fast is not that which generally bears scrutiny. Great ability does, of course, but that's not the stuff of this guy. Currying favor from the ruling class pays well, but it's generally because of the ugly services rendered.

Junior thinks he can make pronouncements and they shall be, but the world is much more unruly with the advent of that danged internet...

135. He wasn't asked to withdraw. He was ordered to.
No nominee for any position tells any president to forget about it after having accepted a nomination. No nominee for any position blindsinds any president by withdrawing out of the blue. If a nominee discovers or remembers something in his or her background which may be a problem for the administration, the nominee contacts someone in the White House to discuss it and make a decision on how to proceed. If withdrawal is the decision, the White House determines the timing. Rove pulled the plug on Kerik.

143. GREAT POINT!!!! We need to get Mileage out of this.
This story has to 'get legs'. If on Monday, they're still talking Kerik-gate, that would be great. There is apparently a lot more substance and story there. How can we get the media to keep digging into this? We need to express moral outrage. The Chimp can get two weeks worth of bad press out of this, or it can die by Monday. Let's do our part.

You know Rove is picking through his bag of tricks for some Big Announcement to distract attention away from this story. Plus Christmas is coming, which tends to quash any political talk (except for people like us, who live and breath the stuff.)

You won't see much of Tom Ridge now, because that will just redirect attention back to the Kerik sidebar story. Some subtle reassurance that we are safe because Tom's still on the job, but no big story.

69. It was only a matter of time
Aside from the Taser business (he had the NYPD buy them, then he was appointed to the board and got six mil for his trouble), his dealings with a pharmaceutical company, his illegitimate child that he ABANDONED in Korea to be raised by another soldier, his declaring bankruptcy in his past....then there's the confirmation hearings:

Q: Mr. Kerik, why is it that when you were assigned by the president to train the new Iraqi police force, that you went on vacation in the middle of the effort? How many did you say you would train, how many did you train, how many are now trained, how many killed on the job, how many deserted their posts?

The guy is a walking TIME BOMB. And this is just the shit that is a matter of public record...

And, yeah, Rudy has got to be pissed. It all comes down to guilt by association.

Kerik was hired for security at Pharma because they were experiencing rampant theft. Guess what they make? Right boys and girls oxycontin.

I think Kerik stole mass quantities of the drug himself and that he might be Rush's supplier. The homeland security gig would have given him perfect cover but he was greedy on other fronts (he is a pig after all) and he got tripped up.

Thats my HO YMMV.

KERIK as thug: http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.ph...

http://newyorkmetro.com/nymetro/news/media/columns/medi... /

.... Then Judith and Rupert found each other -- and ReganBooks was born. Not only did their commercial instincts mesh, but Judy's what's-the-world-ever-done-for-me politics were highly compatible with the Murdoch view.

And then the sex part. It's a one-woman show.

I have never heard anyone talk about sex the way Judy does. I have never heard anyone talk about their sexual partners the way Judy does. I have never heard anyone analyze individual motivations, the workings of the marketplace, and politics, too, in such precisely sexual terms. The other day, on her show, she kept interrupting her tempered guests on the subject of why women like Bill Clinton, and, voice rising, saying: "They want to have sex with him -- that's why they like him!"

Early in her career at Simon & Schuster, she published a book called The Rogue Warrior and fought tooth and nail for a full-face cover photo of the author. "Don't they understand?" she stormed to me. "Women will buy this because they want to fuck him!" She got the full face and a best-seller.

Born: 1953
Birthplace: Massachusetts?

Growing up on Long Island, Regan earned a BA in English from Vassar College. In the late 1970s, she studied voice and worked as a secretary before becoming a reporter for the National Enquirer. In 1987 Regan proposed a book on American families and their role models to Simon & Schuster. The editors were impressed, and she joined Simon & Schuster, developing a string of best-selling celebrity “tell-all” books, including those by talk show host Rush Limbaugh and radio personality Howard Stern. Her aggressive, sales-oriented approach was highly successful, but critics charged she was undermining publishing by manufacturing personality-driven books. In 1994 Rupert Murdoch gave Regan her own imprint at HarperCollins, ReganBooks, and a TV show on Fox News. A Manhattan resident, Regan is divorced and has two children.

Published Howard Stern's 'Private Parts' and 'Miss America,' 'Monica Lewinsky's Untold Story: An Amorality Tale,' 'Quivers a Life' and Rush Limbaugh's 'See I Told You So' and 'The Way it Ought to Be'
Hosts Fox News interview show

Why she might be annoying:
Her son was born out of wedlock and she never married the father.
She divorced Robert Kleinschmidt, the father of her daughter, in a very angry divorce. The divorce battle went for over five years and went through dozens of lawyers and many judges, costing more than a million dollars.
When she published rival Rush Limbaugh's book, Howard Stern called her 'Judas Limbaugh.'
She wrote for the National Enquirer for three years.

Why she might not be annoying:
She looks like Isabella Rossellini.
She graduated Vassar College on a scholarship.
She has edited books from the left and right political viewpoint with out censoring ideas.
She ranked #94 in Entertainment Week Power List of 1993.

http://www.zianet.com/insightanalytical/newlow.htm

Regan looked straight into the camera and for almost 10 minutes, delivered a pseudo stream-of-consciousness poetry riff mocking Clinton. Referring to his sad boyhood, she mocked his loneliness, then proclaimed that he built himself up and called himself KING, because "I am rich and I can do what I want!" She likened him to the cast out Socks, and envisioned him an old man meeting up with Socks at 125th street, both holding tin cups. ....

It was incredibly vicious. What was especially appalling was how she took the most painful aspects of Bill's background--his truly grievous childhood--and twisted them, using them to mock him. If this wasn't the "politics of personal destruction" I don't know how else you could describe this horrific display. ....

175. This guy rose to prominence by enforcing Giuliani's police-state
management style when Guiliani was mayor of New York.

(snip)

With the nomination of Bernard Kerik, former head of the New York City Police Department (NYPD), as Homeland Security secretary, George W. Bush has added another unconditional loyalist to his administration. He has also ensured that this vast umbrella agency stays in the hands of a right-wing proponent of police-state measures.

(snip)

Indeed, Kerik embodies the cynical exploitation of the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks. He has parlayed his eyewitness account of the collapse of the Twin Towers—and his dog-like loyalty to his boss, former New York Mayor Rudolph Giuliani—into a sizeable personal fortune.

It was this personal connection to Giuliani that paved the way to Kerik’s wealth and fame. A martial arts expert, he had served in the military, worked as the warden of a county jail in New Jersey, and later as a security contractor for the Saudi monarchy. He then joined the New York City Police Department, working on drug busts as an undercover agent.

(snip)

In 1993, he attached himself to Giuliani, who, as a former federal prosecutor, ran a right-wing, law-and-order campaign for mayor. Kerik, then an NYPD detective, became the Republican candidate’s bodyguard and chauffeur.

After Giuliani’s election, he was rewarded for these personal services with a series of increasingly senior posts in the city hierarchy—first as a deputy commissioner, then as head of the Correction Department, and finally as commissioner of the NYPD. He left in his wake a series of corruption scandals, and a residue of bitterness over the subjective and vindictive way in which he rewarded his supporters and punished anyone who challenged him.

Take a look at that whole article. It's an interesting read.

181. Attaching himself to Giuliani doesn't make him right-wing?
So, that article says Giuliani "ran a right-wing, law-and-order campaign for mayor." Sorry, but Rudy is the furthest thing from right-wing. He's not even a moderate Republican. Anyone who thinks Rudy's "right-wing" must be a Communist or a moron, take your pick. Trust me, this NYC Democrat voted for him twice. If he could have run again in 2001, I'd have voted for him again. Instead, I voted for Mark Green.

http://msnbc.msn.com/id/6700947/site/newsweek/

"Kerik's somewhat cavalier attitude is best captured by his time in Iraq. After the invasion in the spring of 2003, Kerik was sent to Baghdad to organize the Iraqi police. But Kerik didn't seem to show much interest in Iraqis, said a senior U.S. official who worked with him. He appeared to enjoy going on night raids against "bad guys" with some South African mercenaries who were serving as bodyguards to U.S."

128. TPM: Did Newsweek query bring Kerik down?
http://www.talkingpointsmemo.com/archives/week_2004_12_05.php#004203

(December 11, 2004 -- 01:26 AM EDT)
Newsweek's Mark Hosenball suggests that his investigation may have been what scotched the Kerik nomination. And he may be right. According to this story on the Newsweek website, early this evening Newsweek reporters faxed the White House documents detailing an arrest warrant that was issued for Kerik in 1998, stemming from a dispute over unpaid bills for a condo he owned in New Jersey.

-- Josh Marshall
</snip>

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/6697161/site/newsweek/

<snip>
But there may have been other issues at play. Kerik, who recently made millions in the private sector, once filed for personal bankruptcy as a New York cop. And just five years ago he was in financial trouble over a condominium he owned in New Jersey. More serious trouble than anyone realized: NEWSWEEK has discovered that a New Jersey judge in 1998 had issued an arrest warrant as part of a convoluted series of lawsuits relating to unpaid bills on his condo. The magazine faxed documents, including the arrest warrant, over to the White House around 6:00 p.m. Friday, asking for comment. Neither Kerik nor the White House had any immediate response. At 8:30 p.m., Kerik had submitted his letter to the president.

<snip>
The lawsuit relating to Kerik’s apartment stems from his failure to pay maintenance fees. A court found that Kerik owed about $5,000 on the unit. When Kerik failed to comply with a subpoena related to the unpaid bill, a judge on Aug. 24, 1998 issued a warrant for Kerik’s arrest. It is unclear whether the warrant was ever served or withdrawn. Court computer records indicate that the lawsuit remains open, but there was some confusion on Friday over the location of the full record.

Kerik had also been fined a substantial amount for having two cops do research for his book while they were on duty. I think it was a $2500 fine.

Kerik resigned because he had been informed, as you detail for our reading pleasure, that he was going to be put on the hot seat next week.

Please compare this with what occured to Mr. Goss's choice for his right-hand man. It was leaked to the media the fellow had been arrested for stealing a pound of bacon years ago. Goss, Bush, and Cheney blamed a small group of CI operatives for leaking that information. Gosh, looks like a few more leaks will occure.

That's what the headline should be! With all the shit this con man has pulled, a "nanny problem" is what makes him un-con-firm-able?!?!

They must have a hard time finding neocon clones who haven't hired illegals (and probably failed to pay various employment taxes).

Pretending to be a top cop is OK?

Pretending to be an administrator is OK?

Pretending to be a tough guy who will 'stay til the job is done' in Iraq, screwing up cuz he is way over his head then turning tail and running out is OK?

The guy was a body guard and driver, like the thugs mob bosses have. He got in with a morally bankrupt NYC mayor and started thinking he was a player. Found out he couldn't match wits with real cops and he didn't do so well with his tough guy routine where there is real danger.

Would have been fun to see what else turned up in his closet.

166. Riker's Island & diverted money.
Excerpt from Newsday article:

"He couldn't run the Rikers commissary without getting greedy and making a mess, in a jam," one correction veteran said. "Now he's gonna be in charge of the Department of Homeland Security? Let's just hope the terrorists don't decide to come back."

This former subordinate was referring to just one of many petty scandals that have hung over Kerik's career. When he ran Correction, nearly $1 million of tobacco-company rebates were diverted into an obscure foundation Kerik was president of. This was for cigarettes bought with taxpayer money and then sold at inflated prices to jail inmates. But this rebate money - would kickbacks be a better word? - got spent entirely outside the normal rules for public funds.

No one was criminally charged. But a whole rash of IRS rules were seemingly violated. One board member quit in protest when the foundation treasurer refused to provide him with financial reports. And no one has ever explained where all the money went.

It was a typical Kerik deal. He behaved from start to finish like normal rules didn't apply to him.

http://www.newsday.com/news/local/newyork/politics/ny-nyhen034063947dec03,0,2450252.column

Written by Ellis Henican, Dec. 3, 2004.

Nobody in this thread has mentioned Riker's Island. I see it as a likely reason for the withdrawal.

Also, someone called Tacopino a "mob" lawyer. I think he is regarded as a "cop" lawyer.
