8. What if the teacher had been helping students with a defense fund for Zimmerman?
Edited on Wed Apr-11-12 05:33 AM by No Elephants
I know my own opinion of the Martin case is not relevant to the teacher's firing (nor would I have fired the teacher--if I were principal, I would only have had a very respectful discussion with the teacher about what was allowed and not allowed and why, as my prior post stated).

In expressing my personal opinion about Zimmerman's guilt, I simply tried to make it clear that there is a distinction to be made between what one believes about the Martin killing and what is appropriate, for a teacher to do with students in a school, from both a legal standpoint and a parental standpoint. (I did substitute teach and ful time teach for about two years total, but I don't pretend that experience gave me knowledge about teaching. I do, however, have knowledge about being the parent of a student and I have some legal knowledge.)

My prior post did not in any way support mind control in schools. However, there is a difference between students taking sides in school---which they may freely do and teachers taking sides in school, which I believe there are limits on. (Obviously, teachers can take sides, IMO, on their own time, so I am not trying to control anyone's mind.)

If the teacher had been helping students raise money for Zimmerman's defense fund, I (as a hypothetica parent of a student therer) would have been all over that school like a cheap suit.

You can't, however, make constitutional or even handed (aka fair) rules based on whether you or I share the teacher's position.
