11. What criteria are we to be
judging them by?

The one where there are not enough jobs, and more jobs pay less, when we were told that the benefits of technology and progress would create a "leisure society" where one of our biggest problems would be what to do with all of our spare time?

Or, is it the one were many of us find ourselves on the opposite side of that ideal? That is, being worked to the bone for low wages, not because it is really necessary, but most likely because of its debilitating effects? When we are deprived of a strong basis in our lives, (stability, security, etc.) we are more prone to fall into despair and learned helplessness.

In today's manifestation of neo-liberal ideology, our ability to slack and have more time to ourselves could be empowering and dangerous to the current system, that is, if we still had our basic needs met, rather than falling prey to homelessness, hunger and illness, as is the current result.

With the vast amount of wealth and an increase in automation, the problem of our place in this world of entrepreneurial transactions and profit as the meaning of life, we may find ourselves asking some very serious questions about the value of a human being and life itself in contrast to the currently dominant paradigm. Our lives can be seen to, in one way or another, depend on that.
