Human beings are not ready to run the world

History indicates that every configuration of society ever tried has failed. Empires have risen, had their time, and then fallen. Egypt, Greece, Rome, The Holy Roman Empire, kingdoms of every sort imaginable, anarchy and communism have each had their day in the sun and are now on the dustbin of history.

Now it’s capitalism’s turn to join that dustbin. The 1% is fighting it, but it’s a fight they can’t win in the long run. The only way they can retain their power is to slaughter and enslave the other 99%, and all of recorded history has shown us that that inevitably leads to the downfall of the tyrants.

Democracy seemed like a good idea. So did socialism. So did regulated capitalism. But the fly in the ointment was always the same: human beings. And as long as humans are involved, any system imaginable will fall victim to the nature of our species.

My point is that I don’t believe that humanity has yet reached the evolutionary stage where we are capable of forming lasting civilizations based on equity, fairness, empathy and sanity. In the meantime, all we can do is muddle through and try our best to control the worst among us.

I dream of a world in which the ignorant will be educated, the evil will be isolated, and the sane will help all live up to their full potential. But it’s unlikely it will come about in our lifetimes.
