Capital is not going to give up it's $$$ easily, and the only way workers have to fight back against that economic injustice is to withhold their labor and demonstrate.

I'm middle aged and I've watched very conservative administrations not only assist the rich, but also dismantle any safety nets in place to help those who are victims of this system. Most of us jumped into politics (or back into politics in my case) with hope that Mr. Obama would be able to turn back this tide in some way.

I think what you're seeing now is a very measured and careful attempt to protest the system without hurting the president (which is why you're seeing protests in NYC rather than Washington).

The elections in 2012 will be telling. If average folks give up on voting in even bigger numbers we will have a republican in office again, and then I believe the economy will get even worse and protests will be more serious.
