55. We could put a VAT on all manufactured goods, Chinese or domestic.
That would help us repay our debt.

It would raise the price of oil and slow down out economy in some ways, but would be the least painful way to deal with the deficit.

A lot of people I know are buying really cheap used clothing and other items anyway. The number of resale stores in my area has risen rapidly. People buy a lot of stuff cheaply from the internet.

A VAT -- sales tax -- on new items would help us collect tax revenue right back from the Chinese.
