the emotionally fulfilling relationships they read about or see on TV are actually possible in real life when, according to him, "real men" are too busy earning a living to respond to their women's emotional needs, and it is unfair--cruel, even--to expect them to.

Sex isn't what he is referring to; emotional responsiveness is--you know, like caring how her day went, or how she feels about something, or else paying attention to her when he comes home instead of hsucking down a beer while vegging out in front of the TV.
