The Kennedys, the Roosevelts, even most of the Rockefellers, knew they had more money than they would ever need. In the previous years, contributing to humanitarian efforts and championing the less fortunate was the way to go. Even if it were expedient in public life, it was still all good for the rest of us. Lately the "continue to grab everything you can" attitude seems to prevail. BTW what has happened to the group of bazillionares who want to pay more taxes?
