41. Yeah, like so many rightwing criminals have done in England and the U.S.!
I have NO FAITH in the so-called "justice" systems in either country. I've seen them fail and do the opposite of justice too often. Also, people who are this rich and powerful simply do NOT go to jail, nor do most of their "made men" (unless they "fall on their swords," as "Scooter Libby" did, to protect their bosses for future reward or to cover up something MUCH BIGGER). (I have my theories about what the Libby sword-fall was covering up.)

Not that it isn't as gratifying as hell to see this major RW shit in trouble and all the sewage leaking out. But I'd say "enjoy it while it lasts," because we have been here before, time and again, entranced by the notion that our exceedingly corrupt "justice" systems and political systems are going to produce real justice. Indeed, some of us have been here since Nov. 22, 1963.* And, lately, there have been so many horrors swept under the transglobal corporate/war profiteer carpet, it is truly dizzying.

One thing I think we should look out for (if possible) or at least be cognizant of, is that the military, police and intelligence powers-that-be in the U.S. and England have been doing exactly what Murdoch has been doing: spying on everybody. This big, explosive scandal--which (if history is any guide) will not result in justice being done--could even be a smokescreen for yet more sinister activities by the very parties who are "investigating" Murdoch.

The suspicion in Colombia ($7 BILLION in military aid from U.S. taxpayers via the Bush Junta) is that the big government spying operation overseen by Bush tool, Alvaro Uribe, was using the spy info to create "hit lists" and resulted in the murders of thousands of trade unionists, human rights workers, peasant farmer organizers, teachers, community activists, journalists, political leftists and others, by the Colombian military (about half) and their rightwing paramilitary death squads, in addition to death threats against judges, prosecutors and political leaders, and use of spying to monitor and anticipate investigations of Uribe's crimes. The U.S. government (Obama) has been actively protecting and even coddling Uribe, probably because of what he knows about Bush Junta crimes in Colombia. Justice ain't in it.

Murdoch apparently used his spying info to get or create tabloid stories, to control politicians and other such purposes. (No murders that we know of yet--although there have been two suspicious deaths.) Think of the even greater powers and far worse purposes of those engaged in torture, illegal war and massive theft, under "Iron Curtains" of secrecy with "Patriot Act" curtailment of human and civil rights.

I think we need to understand that notions of justice, truth, transparency and democracy itself are not in operation at these levels of power--the U.S. government, the U.K. government and their transglobal corporate/war profiteer rulers. It's possible that within such corrupt imperial structures internal wars erupt. (The war between Cheney/Rumsfeld and the CIA--of which we saw only the 'tips of the iceberg'--the Plame and Brewster-Jennings outings and David Kelly's murder--may be one such internal imperial war.) Could be Murdoch is on the wrong side of some kind of internal war. Both sides are bad (tyrannical, anti-democratic, corrupt) but he stepped on the wrong bad toes, and will suffer scandal for a while, as a result, and some loss of revenue, but VERY likely will "land on his feet." I'm just speculating, at this point, based on following many such scandals closely. But our normal democratic visions of this level of criminal doing "the perp walk" need to be tempered with realism and above all with suspicion--deep suspicion--of everything we read and are presented with in the corporate 'news' media show. Also, having followed the Guardian and the BBC on their coverage of Latin America, I can tell you that even they are not to be trusted. They have failed in some respects (certainly on LatAm) and they can be "played."
