This morning I was reflecting on how the US did not feel any need to atone for Nagasaki or Hiroshima bombings, and because of this, our international policies became progressively more harsh. We did not catch ourselves in the mirror, and take this as a national learning opportunity, that the bombing was another holocaust.
Our inability to see ourselves as barbarians ('us' being those that shape international policy) has really blinded us to repeat and in fact embody that which we 'fight'.
And this blind spot grows the longer we do not hold atrocities accountable.
