Pulling the strings of sentiment and guilt to once again pressure the formerly-independent White House press corps to conform and fall in line.

The members of the press have already shown support for Tony Snow in his time of tribulation. They are not mean-spirited -- they sent him off with sympathy and welcomed him back warmly. Now, back to the business at hand, please.

This "gesture" doesn't come from the ranks of the press corps -- it comes from Karl Rove's Psy-Ops team. There's nothing wrong with wearing a flag pin on your lapel either, but if everyone at the office looks at you funny if you don't -- then there's something wrong with the picture.

That's the source of my discomfiture.
