George W. Bush has “Narcissistic Personality Disorder” and is severely mentally ill

“I blogged previously that Bush seems to have the characteristics of a person with narcissistic personality disorder” (Retrieved November 12, 2008, from http://leisureguy.wordpress.com/2006/10/22/george-bush-narcissistic-personality-disorder/).

“Bush Diagnosed with Narcissistic Personality Disorder” (Retrieved November 12, 2008, from http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=132x1821195).

“Jerome Doolittle on Bush’s Narcissistic Personality Disorder” (Retrieved November 12, 2008, from http://www.lies.com/wp/2004/04/16/jerome-doolittle-on-bushs-narcissistic-personality-disorder/).

“George Bush and NPD . . . DSM Criteria . . . A pervasive pattern of grandiosity (in fantasy or behavior), need for admiration, and lack of empathy, beginning by early adulthood and present in a variety of contexts, as indicated by five (or more) of the following. . . .” (Retrieved November 12, 2008, from http://turcopolier.typepad.com/sic_semper_tyrannis/2008/06/george-bush-and.html).

“Even as a narcissist, Bush knows he isn’t a great intellect, and compensates by dismissing the value of intellect altogether” (Paul L. Minot (M.D., psychiatrist). Retrieved November 12, 2008, from http://www.dlmweb.com/news98.html).

“Westen says professional ethics prevent him from making a diagnosis from a distance. But he says U.S. President George W. Bush ‘exudes’ narcissistic traits and ‘a kind of cockiness when he doesn’t know things’” (Sharon Kirkey. (2008, September 16). A PORTRAIT OF THE NARCISSIST. http://www.canada.com/. Retrieved November 12, 2008, from http://www.canada.com/topics/news/national/story.html?id=d29a4b0d-029c-4ce5-b5cf-b7827c6763e6).

“Psychologically speaking, Mr. George W. Bush is what is called a ‘malignant narcissist.’ A narcissist is someone who has become hypnotized and entranced by their own inflated self-image. They have become so self-absorbed that not only are they not in genuine relation with others, but they relate to others (including the environment) as objects to satisfy their own need for self-aggrandizement. A ‘malignant’ narcissist, however, is a narcissist who reacts sadistically to others who don’t support and enable their narcissism” (Paul Levy. Retrieved November 12, 2008, from http://www.apfn.net/Messageboard/02-08-05/discussion.cgi.19.html).

People should not enable George W. Bush’s malignant narcissism.

“A Narcissist as President . . . Glenn, although your daily column and (I presume) your book accurately analyze Pres. Bush’s worldview and its consequences, there is another aspect that should be explored. had_enough’s posting, for example, points out that GWB probably exhibits narcissistic personality disorder. I think that is most certainly the case. (For those who doubt it, look up the criteria for NPD and compare to GWB’s actions.)” (formerprof. “What, if they say that the President has deceived the American public, the Congress, and the Senate, and that he did so, not because of any rational reasons, but due to an ‘acute narcissistic personality disorder’? . . . And that this acute narcissistic personality disorder of the President has caused unnecessary deaths of Americans and waste of billions of dollars to the US Treasury” (Retrieved November 12, 2008, from http://www.shamsali.org/taj/2005/staying-course.html).

“The most disturbing aspect about narcissists, however, is their pathological inability to empathize with others, with the exception of those who either mirror them, or whom they idealize. Hence Bush’s horrifying insensitivity to the Katrina victims, his callous jokes when visiting grievously injured soldiers, and numerous other instances” (Retrieved November 12, 2008, from http://ttiot8.livejournal.com/2542.html).

When we look deeper into Bush’s psyche, we find a self-loathing so intense that he feels the need to compensate for it through his belief that he has been especially chosen by God to be president of the United States. “Re: Bush suffers from Narcissistic Personality Disorder . . . Bush suffers from Narcissistic Personality Disorder. People with narcissistic personality disorder also have difficulty recognizing the needs and feelings of others, and are dismissive, contemptuous and impatient when others share or discuss their concerns or problems. They are also oblivious to the hurtfulness of their behaviour or remarks, show an emotional coldness and a lack of reciprocal interest, exhibit envy (especially when others are accorded recognition), have an arrogant, disdainful and patronizing attitude, and are quick to blame and criticise others when their needs and expectations are not met” (gene...@xxxxxxxxx. “I would like to name Bush’s illness ‘malignant egophrenic (as compared to schizophrenic) disorder,’ or ‘ME disorder,’ for short. “President Bush has a Narcissistic Personality Disorder. The most powerful man on the planet is mentally ill. I am not the first to write or talk about this. I am sure that his father and mother secretly wish they had identified his problem at early age. Perhaps they just didn’t know why George Jr. was different. . . . What I have read about narcissism seems to accurately describe George W. Bush” (Posted by LS Butts. (2006, December 22). George W. Bush: Narcissist and Chief. http://justiceeroom.blogspot.com/. “What Is Wrong with George Bush? . . . From http://www.wordiq.com/definition/Narcissistic_personality_disorder: A narcissistic personality disorder . . . is characterized by an all-pervasive pattern of grandiosity (in fantasy or behavior), need for admiration or adulation and lack of empathy, usually beginning by early adulthood and present in various contexts. “Because George Bush is that narcissistic, that desperate, and yes, that sociopathic as well” (Retrieved November 12, 2008, from http://www.liberalrapture.com/2007/09/bush-and-oj.html).

“Unfortunately, President George W. Bush is a very good example of narcissistic personality disorder at this pathological level of functioning. He is overly sensitive to criticism, surrounds himself with those who will reinforce his grandiose sense of the false-hero-self (butt-kissers), lacks empathy, displays a restricted range of affect in general but is sometimes given to bouts of acting-out (through rage or drinking, in his case), is manipulative, interpersonally exploitive, compulsively lies to do so, demonstrates poor reality testing (at the dysfunctional level of the personality disordered vs. that of the psychotic) and will only attempt tasks in which he has unrealistic assurances of success . In terms of psychopathology, Dubya is well beyond the ‘spoiled brat’ stage that the researchers seem to have addressed misusing clinical language” (rdf. (2007, February 22). The Authoritarian Personality. http://www.talk2action.org/. Retrieved November 12, 2008, from http://www.talk2action.org/story/2007/2/22/9536/90913).

“But Bush (43) is no dummy. Intellectually lazy for sure, but he is not stupid. His problem, it seems to me, is one of psychology not intelligence. Is there any doubt that he suffers from some personality disorder?” (Retrieved November 12, 2008, from http://www.hotpotatomash.com/2008/02/ronald-reagan-t.html).

“GW Bush, who--again, based purely on his actions--shows all the signs of someone with constantly worsening narcissistic personality disorder” (Retrieved November 12, 2008, from http://letters.salon.com/opinion/greenwald/2007/06/20/bush_motives/view/index11.html).

“Bush has narcissistic personality disorder” (chemoelectric. Retrieved November 12, 2008, from http://www.talkleft.com/story/2005/10/04/862/94161).

Any psychologists here? I would like to know what sort(s) of pathology Bush suffers from. I generally don’t like to extrapolate politics from personality, but Bush is impossible to ignore in this regard. This man is deeply disturbed and his illness has affected us all. What is he? A delusional narcissist? What? Somebody give me a pop-psychology diagnosis (jrw).

Yes, narcissistic personality disorder, with delusions of competence, a sense of aristocratic entitlement, and perpetual immunity from the murderous consequences of his own ill-considered actions or inaction. None of this bout him is new. He has demonstrated sociopathic reckless and irresponsible behavior his entire life. Will history bail him out this time, as opposed to his father’s friends? 9/11, Katrina, and the economic meltdown are his legacy, and I doubt historians, even those sympathetic to Republicans, will see his disastrous presidency as ill-fated due to circumstances beyond his control (Rich).
