Until Lucy Jones comes on the TV and tells everyone where the quake was and how big it was, etc, one can never know what to expect.
BTW, under the right conditions, the basin of the Valley could become liquefied. In addition, Santa Monica is a low-lying area on the coast and scientists predict it could be devastated by a tsunami if one were ever to occur.
So land surfers could very easily become water surfers too.
