20. Prison as garbage disposal
I don't want to see anyone go to an American prison. Prisons serve the same function as an in-sink garbage disposal: shred what is undesired into little pieces and flush it down the drain, never to be seen from again. Another aspect of the "use once, throw away" culture where anything or any person with a flaw or momentary failing is discarded, never to be allowed to trouble normal society ever again.

Perhaps one day prisons will be run by social workers and psychologists who will know how to use behavioral methods to turn out repaired individuals and not by fascists who turn troubled people into full-blown psychopaths.
