It doesn't automatically default to Spanish. If it did, that first "press 1" message would be in Spanish, wouldn't it?

I live in a Spanish settled area of the country and a lot of the old folks around here who learned English in school haven't spoken it for years and are much more comfortable in Spanish. That's fine with me. I've learned to understand it over the years. I'm happy that businesses offer Spanish language options for them.

I don't know why people freak out when they confront folks speaking a language they don't understand. Do they all think that people talking and laughing in a foreign language are talking and laughing about them? I've never really understood it.

In any case, I'm perfectly happy to be just another minority in a state full of minorities--New Mexico. Knowing that my Spanish speaking neighbors can navigate things like the electric company's phone tree doesn't bother me at all. I don't even mind pressing "1" for English.
