Johnny Trevor doesn't need "kindness and understanding" for his bigotry. He's clearly gotten too much of that in his life and that's the problem. He needs to be firmly, and unequivocally informed that he's wrong. He needs to be told that if he refuses to vote for an African American then we don't need his vote.
