235. I was laid off in 1985, at the worst time of Reagonomics. I did what the OP
suggested. I went back to school, worked two jobs while I did, fed my kids hot dogs and beans, and I ended up better off. I took a job I would never have had the guts to take before, because I didn't have anything to lose. I prospered. But, dear OP, we can use some socialism here. We need our infrastructure rebuilt. We are nearing the point where we need some good old FDR type of government. And, also, you need to lighten up a bit, nobody likes or listens to snarky lectures.
