Jeez, if you're George W. Bush sometimes it just doesn't pay to get outta bed in the morning. Like last week, for instance. For awhile it appeared the Bush Crime Family would finally get what they've been lusting after for several years: An honest-to-god war in northern South America. Oh, it would have been grand! The US Navy off the coast of Venezuela (again) launching those oh-so-deadly Tomahawk cruise missiles at downtown Caracas; the Marines storming across the Columbian border into Maracaibo; WMDs to be found in caves in San Cristobal or El Dorado; Exxon/Mobil sending in Blackwater mercenaries to seize - goddamit! - what in fact belongs to Exxon/Mobil: all the oil in Venezuela!

Yes, it would have been grand. Blood! Glory! Oil! The overthrow (permanently this time, by god!) of Hugo Chavez! Did I mention oil?!

But . . . sigh . . . it was not to be. The parties involved - Columbia, Ecuador and Venezuela - took the girly-man way out. The cowardly sons-a-bitches used (choke!) diplomacy to solve their latest US-instigated problem. It got so kissy-face, in fact, that the hated Commie-symp Hugo Chavez's announced Sunday he was restoring full diplomatic ties with Colombia and reopening his country's embassy in Bogota. All this after smoothing over a crisis sparked by Colombia's cross-border attack on a rebel base in Ecuador. Venezuela also invited back Colombian diplomats expelled by Chavez last week. Shit! What's next? Tea parties? Quilting Bees? Group hugs? Where's the war, ya' fruitcakes?

But, it got worse. Columbian President Alvaro Uribe actually (gag!) apologized! To Ecuador, fer crissakes! And, adding insult to injury, Uribe promised never, ever to do it again - never to carry out another act of outright aggression against a neighbor, cross his heart and hope to die. Even if the US promised - yet again - to organize, fund, provide cover, assist in deployment, and actually help pull the triggers. (The BCF is praying for a chance to launch those shiny, sleek, phallic Tomahawk Cruise missiles and time's running out! Hurry! We want war! We want war!)

So, end of story. For now. The underlying tensions remain. Everyone is aware of the historic, rapacious aggressor to the north, now thoroughly pissed it once again missed a chance to glom up all that heavy crude Chavez claims is the property of Venezuela. Ecuadorian President Rafael Correa said it would be "difficult to recover trust" in Uribe's US-allied government.

No! Really?
