Somehow, Americans have been brainwashed into a vicarious identification with the very class that oppresses them. Of course it doesn't help that labor unions have become so weak over the past 40 years or so, but I see that more as a symptom than a cause.

We need to make *CLASS* issues respectable again, and make class warfare respectable too. Just the term "class warfare" sounds vaguely treasonous to many people. It sounds kind of Marxist--because it is! One reason I welcome the recent participation of a few old-style Marxists on DU, even when I don't agree with them, is because Marx made more sense than anyone when it came to class issues.

When people begin to see through the divide-and-conquer strategies used to keep them weak and powerless, when they begin to lose their inhibitions about thinking and acting AS A CLASS, then we'll start seeing some positive changes in this country.
