A year ago, there was no doubt who wore the crown. The French President's newly wedded wife, Carla Bruni-Sarkozy, was the pin-up of the diplomatic circuit. Model, singer, former lover of Eric Clapton and Mick Jagger ... she was a woman with whom every leader's wife positively dreaded having their photo taken.

Yet today in Strasbourg, the other half who put glamour back into politics met a First Lady who might just prove a match for her.

Michelle Obama has won both hearts and minds since her husband became the 44th President of the United States in January. Cool, intelligent and beautiful, she has plenty of glamour in her own right as well as being Mr Obama's rock and equal, a feisty mother-of-two and an American Vogue cover star.

I am glad Europe likes Michelle Obama. The US doesn't. She is angry and doesn't much the US.
