Also, her recovery is remarkable, fabulous. I recall she was "cracking jokes" right after her surgery, and now I'm sure she can resume working on her triple Axel any day now.

WASHINGTON (AFP) — Former US first lady Barbara Bush was released from a Texas hospital Friday, nine days after undergoing open heart surgery.

Bush, 83, was taken to hospital after she experienced shortness of breath. Doctors detected a hardened aortic valve and replaced it in a 2.5-hour procedure described as successful.

"Mrs. Bush was a remarkable patient," heart surgeon Dr. Gerald Lawrie of Houston's Methodist Hospital said in a statement.

"Her recovery was very quick for this type of procedure. I expect her to be back to normal soon and resume her active life."

Bush will be restricted in her activities for at least another three weeks, Lawrie added.

Aortic valve replacements can be either from man-made materials or biologic tissue. In Bush's case doctors replaced her aortic valve with a pig's valve.
