16. I hold the position that FDR would never have been elected if it weren't for the Great Depression.
If the economy were doing good, he would never have gotten anywhere near the presidency because of tremendous resistance from Wall Street and big business in general. He'd be considered his day's version of Dennis Kucinich today.

If there is going to be public works programs and a revival of FDR-era programs to fight poverty rein in corporate malfeasance, it might only come after the US economy has flown itself into the ground and is utterly ruined. Then they'd have to accept a new FDR or face a "peasant revolt" or something worse, like France 1789.

Even during the Great Depression, FDR was almost overthrown by Wall Street until Gen. Smedley Butler blew the whistle on the plot to launch a military coup and basically turn the US into a pro-Hitler/pro-big business military dictatorship.
