They would either have to defend him religiously or risk losing support of the Republican establishment. This is the conservative crack up that we keep hearing about. The middle and working class White male conservative that forms the core of Rush's listening base has little or nothing in common with the rich and powerful elite that control the Republican party.

The power elite of the Republican party wants more temporary foreign workers in order to drive down labor costs even further, and this is what McCain wants as well. Rush, Coutler, Laura Ingram, Hannity, Savage, et al. cannot sell this to their listeners and keep an audience.
