Yesterday, July 16, Troy Anthony Davis was granted a 90 day stay of execution by the Georgia Board of Pardons and Parole. This means he won't be executed tonight, as was scheduled! This is great news, and it is not yet enough. According to
Democracy Now! this morning, the Board of Pardons and Parole will be hearing new evidence in the case. They have the power to commute his sentence to life with parole or life without parole.
If they do not do this within 90 days, he will be executed. Meanwhile, his defense team is also working on getting him a new trial, in light of new witnesses who have come forward to exonerate him and declarations by 7 of the 9 original witnesses who testified against Davis that they were coerced/threatened into making false statements. (See links at the end of this post for more background info on the case.)
I just received an email from one of the people working on this case in Georgia, asking us to take these steps:
- Continue to send faxes to the Georgia Board of Pardons and Parole via http://www.aiusa.org/troydavis">this link. Faxes are sent by Amnesty International and there's no charge to you.
- Send a letter to Georgia Moratorium and it will be delivered to the Board on your behalf with thousands of other letters. You can print a letter to send them here. Fax it to 404.876.2276. (Of course you could also write a personal letter and fax it to them at that number.)
- Print and distribute these postcards for people to sign and send.
- To get on the Georgia Moratorium email list for updates on this case and other Georgia death penalty developments, email [email protected]. Contact person: Laura Moye 404-876-5661x12.
- Do what you can to keep spreading the word and keep momentum building!
Thank you everyone at DU who has been faxing, emailing, and getting the word out about Troy Davis!
