It may be an oddball example, but taking pride in not knowing about gourmet food is exactly the same sort of mindset that denounces/fears "liberals" as latte- or espresso-drinkers. Just recently a court made some area schools remove anti-evolution stickers from their biology textbooks. Does this sort of thing happen elsewhere? Hell yeah. But I know that the amount of this sort of shit that I've had to deal with has increased tenfold since I moved south.
