But he was so awesome-he started teaching me about politics and to be a loyal liberal dem starting when I was six and said I really liked Richard Nixon. We watched all the Dem and Repub conventions together. Papaw and Mamaw had dinners with their African-American friends in a tiny rural Texas town even in the 1940's when it was kind of dangerous to do it. They lived next door to Mamaw's sister and her husband who was a vocal and loyal Republican. Papaw and his brother-in-law got into some massive political arguments and I loved listening to them. I remember when he was sick with cancer that he walked up the steep courthouse steps with my mother holding him up just so he could vote. Sorry to blab on, but I got to thinking about my grandparents and how wonderful they were and I thought I would share. I was blessed to have had them in my life.
