53. All of China is watching to see how America treats its leader -
whether as an equal or otherwise. How the heck do we explain that in grabbing President Hu like this Bush is indeed treating the Chinese president just like he would treat any other world leader - disrespectfully. The Chinese that I work with and know are reserved in terms of physical touch with people they do not know or work with. Although it is changing, in China you tend not to shake hands in a business situation. You and they offer business cards to each other, with a small bow. And you are supposed to accept their card with both hands. One hand is considered rude. This is how a Chinese (or any other nationality you care to name) grandmother would correct her grandchild. As someone up the list said, if Bush had a clue or cared about diplomacy, heck, let's just say good manners, he would have followed Hu down the wrong steps and then they could have both walked to the other side of the podium. Oy - 3 more years of this.
