15. Iraq, FEMA, and Homeland Security
I'm not sure which weighed the heaviest.

The most personal impact came from speaking to some of the soldiers I trained, or lead when I was still in the Army. Some of the ways they are being used there or deployed are just criminally stupid. I can't be more explicit about that for obvious reasons.

Homeland Security, seems an exercise in wasteful spending, particually when meaningful steps could be taken but aren't.

FEMA and Katrina, really if we the Federal Government can't mobilize a task force in our own country to alleviate the suffering of citizens, why are we trying it overseas! Planning for Emergencies isn't that tough:
1) Identify the worst case scenario
2) Allocated resources for materials, communications, and training
3) Train and practice
4) Stockpile and stage response resources
5) Respond

The Federal Govt's response to that was beyond pathetic, they need to contract out for planner, or form a disaster Division in the Army to quickly mobolize to sites. The Army and other branches typically have units on call to deploy around the world on 24-hour notice and be on the ground fighting! The idea that we can't have something similar for disaster response for our own citizens is ridiculous.
