He left her for a manicurist...

And I believe if that manicurist had OWNED the place where she worked, Miller would have kept her mouth shut.

Miller was willing to go along with Scanlon's illegalities because they were good for the party in general and his future in particular. And their engagement must have confirmed in her mind that that Scanlon was not put off by her being career-oriented. But what thanks does she get? Scanlon replaces her with a "nobody" whose contributions to his future probably won't go beyond being eye candy. If Miller saw herself as the next Hillary Clinton, the blow Scanlon dealt to her ego would have been unbearable. She didn't react out of jealousy, but out of Scanlon's making a complete mockery of her professional accomplishments and ambitions.

But there's a bright side--Scanlon is paying with only his POLITICAL life. Miller could have taken the path of society schoolmistress Jean Harris, whose finance-turned-longtime lover Herman "The Scarsdale Diet Doctor" Tarnower also kept his receptionist on the side. Things came to a head when Tarnower told Harris he was taking the receptionist to a prestigious testimonial dinner--and to "stop bothering" him. She drove five hours to his home to find Tarnower alone, but with the receptionist's belongings in his bathroom. Harris then proceeded to shoot him to death. In a letter she mailed to Tarnower earlier that day, she wrote that losing him would have been difficult enough "even if a decent woman had taken my place."
