Buckshot or bird shot?

I keep hearing reference to Cheney using buckshot to hunt quail and that he shot Whittington with #6 buckshot.

I just find that hard to believe. Can someone point me to the source that states Cheney was using buckshot?

If Cheney shot anyone at close range with buckshot, that person would be dead...buckshot is what you use to hunt deer, not birds.
