Here's the only story I could find with this much info., but DU'ers discussed this one for a couple of days:
DRIVER KILLS MAN AFTER PRANKSTERS THREW TOMATOES
Wednesday, September 3, 2003
NEWS 05D
Associated Press

MOUNT HOPE, Ohio (AP) -- A motorist fired a shotgun into a cornfield at a group that threw tomatoes at his car, killing a 23-year-old man of Amish heritage, authorities said.

Steven L. Keim of Applecreek and about 10 others, ages 15 to 23, were hiding in a cornfield Monday night along Rt. 241 north of Mount Hope, about 60 miles south of Cleveland.

The group told the Holmes County Sheriff's Office that they were throwing tomatoes and firing paintball guns at vehicles.

After a northbound Lincoln or Cadillac was struck with tomatoes, the driver got out and threatened to shoot whoever threw the tomatoes, the sheriff's department said.

The vehicle drove past the cornfield again and was struck with tomatoes a second time.

The car returned about 25 minutes later. The driver challenged the group to throw more tomatoes, then fired into the cornfield, striking Keim.
