42. If only elections came with erasers and a clean slate for the winners.
I ended in the same place you are. So much to work on it's hard to know where to start. For now I am going to put my trust in my party and keep an eye out. I trust my Senator, Dick Durbin, and I have been fortunate that I can communicate with his office. I really do have confidence in them and they deserve a chance to show that they can govern for the common good.
My husband and I came into our own during the Clinton years. I fondly refer to them as the salad days. We had met in the Reagan era when starting out was very tough. Neither one of us could get a decent job and ended up doing four years in the military. But as I said, by the time the end of the Clinton era, we built a comfortable life for ourselves and our three children. My children now young adults are facing a challenging time to make their own place in the world. I do feel hopeful that they to will have their "salad days". Change is here again.
The only real fear I have is another substantial attack that would send this country into fear and blindly following the wrong path again. I think the media is key if this were to happen so we must be diligent in holding their feet to the fire. No small task. That's why you are so important, and I am so thankful for you and people like you. The internet is key in keeping the truth and the progressive movement forward and the country out of the darkness. Protecting it from political abuse is #1 priority. We can't let them take it from us. I think they would have tried to some degree if they still had majority.
It warms my heart to hear your going to be a Daddy! It really is a magic time when you have your first. It's also a lot of fun. Things out in the "big world" will change and changed again by the time your little one is grown. What is more important is what happens in the day to day life of your "little world" and your little family. Your focus will narrow as it should. When you reach that next stage when your little ones are grown and stepping out into the the world, your focus will broaden again to look at the "big world" as did mine. For now just enjoy your "salad days" for they go by fast.

Best Wishes to you and your Wife,

Congrats Daddy Skinner!
