Sunday: 77 Iraqis, 2 GIs Killed, Including 30 Militiamen Killed by US/Iraqi Forces
The violence in Iraq continued on Sunday and overnight Saturday leaving at least 79 dead and 41 wounded. Among the dead are two American soldiers, a senior Iraqi police official and a police chief. This includes US/Iraqi fighting in Diwaniya resulting in the deaths of 30 militiamen.

Two U.S. soldiers were killed in separate incidents. An explosive device killed a soldier assigned to a combat team in Mosul; the location of the death was not released. A second soldier died from small-arms fire northwest of Baghdad.

In Baghdad: The body of Col. Thamer Salman, a senior police official in the internal affairs department of Iraq's Interior Ministry, was found; he had been shot to death. Six Iraqi police were wounded by a roadside bomb in eastern Baghdad. In the Wazariya neighborhood, a mortar blasted a police patrol; one officer was killed and two others wounded. Another roadside bomb in a southern neighborhood wounded one police officer. Three more bodies were pulled from the Tigris River; they were shot and showed signs of torture.

Also in the capital, two simultaneous bombs wounded up to 20 Iraqis. An explosion wounded six near Mustansiriya University. The others were injured in nearby Victory Square.

In Mosul: Gunmen killed a Kurdish lawyer and the mother of a man who works with the city police. Outside the city, gunmen killed five including three who work at a military base.

In Diwaniya, a combined force of U.S. and Iraqi soldiers killed 30 members of the Shi’te militia.

Outside a hospital in Muqdadiya, a suicide bomber detonated his explosives, killing two people and wounding seven.

In Baquba, five people were killed in separate gun attacks.

A roadside blast in Tikrit killed four civilians and wounded two others.

In Samarra, gunmen shot to death an Iraqi policeman and his 8-year-old son as they left a mosque.

Mortar rounds killed one and wounded two others in Iskandariya.

At Jurf al-Sakhar, gunmen attacked a police patrol recovering a dumped body. One officer was wounded.

Gunmen killed a farmer in Ishaqi.

In Baiji, gunmen killed a university student.

In Khaldiya, police found three dumped bodies. They were blindfolded, shot and showed evidence of torture.

The police chief of Rabia, Colonel Yahya Hamid, was killed by a roadside bomb near the Syrian border.

In Diyala, Iraqi authorities announced the deaths of at least 13 al-Qaeda operatives during the last few days.
