Even during the worst and most totalitarian of regimes there are people who manage to defeat the odds and make it. I'm actually doing just fine, thank you, but making it in George W. Bush's America is not easy for anyone, save for rich kids with trust funds.

I know that as a white male from a middle class background, my chances of making it are demonstrably better than that of people from other backgrounds. I always knew that the people who would suffer the most in a Bush presidency would be from the ranks of the lower income, non-white, female and non-Christian. This is why I became so angry at all of the self-righteous liberals from privileged backgrounds who voted for Ralph Nader in 2000; I think subconsciously these limousine liberals knew that they would not be the ones to really suffer in a Bush presidency, and they'd get to feel good about themselves for "voting their conscience" at the same time. There is a reason that Nader did poorly among blue collar workers and non-white voters: they knew what the stakes were of a Bush presidency.
