National call-in day on Iraq - today, April 5

A number of groups are sponsoring a National Call-in Day today in order to force a debate in Congress on Iraq, something that hasn't happened since 2002!

Rep. Neil Abercrombie (D-HI) introduced a "discharge petition" calling for consideration of HJ Res 55, requiring the President to develop and implement a plan for the withdrawal from Iraq. Once the discharge petition receives signatures of half the members of the House, HJ Res 55, which has been stuck in committee since November 9, 2005, will bypass the usual process and require a full and immediate debate on U.S. policy in Iraq, 17 hours to be divided equally between Democrats and Republicans.

On March 22, the day after Bush said that U.S. troops would still be in Iraq after his presidency, a bi-partisan group of Congress members, 3 Democrats and 3 Republicans, sent a letter to their colleagues urging support for the discharge petition. "Americans deserve an open and honest debate on the future of U.S. policy in Iraq by their representatives in Congress."
