On edit. That's it. I am convinced that this is the October Surprise. The media has been mostly quiet on how they got the conversations. It turns out that it was from the Republicans. They sacrificed one of their own so that the discussions stay on a controllable scandal. No one is talking about Iran, Iraq, the Military Commissions Act or anything.

I expect that the Republicans have dirt on just about everyone in Congress and they create controlled scandals to better control people's attention, like how the royal family in Britain puts out stupid scandals of themselves in the tabloids they own. Perhaps the idea was that Foley's scandal would be less damaging than discussions about the real issues, and they can control the Foley scandal since they have all the evidence. It is probably the case that few people will leave the Republican party over a scandal of "just one bad apple" that has nothing to do with their policies, compared to a case where people starting understanding how bad the Military Commissions Act. This is the October Surprise.
