Swift Boat Veterans for Truth (most of whom didn’t serve with him, near him, or on swift boats) savaged Kerry during the last presidential race, leading to Kerry’s shipmates belatedly taking the offensive.

A wealthy Texan, T. Boone Pickens, a top three subscriber to SBVT (the trio forked over $9.5 million, 19 others $50,000 each, funding the nasty smear campaign), issued a challenge last fall. At a conservative magazine’s dinner, Pickens announced that he’d give $1 million to anyone who proved that anything SBVT said about Kerry was false.

Kerry promptly wrote Boone, accepting the challenge and offering to give the money to Paralyzed Veterans of America. Boone backtracked, added conditions, ducked, dodged, and changed his tune. It was pitiful seeing T. Boone do a Texas two-step on Fox TV where host Sean Hannity helped softball his face-saving, save a million dollars effort.

Kerry’s crewmen were smeared along with him. They offered eyewitness views (never weighed by SBVT) to Pickens. “We . . . will bring with us Navy/Pentagon certified copies of Sen. Kerry’s full military record and his writings and the movie footage you have requested. We will sit with you while you go through them page for page, frame by frame and answer any questions you may have.
