Star-Tribune staff writer Friday, October 22, 2004

Wyoming's leading U.S. House candidates dueled with diplomas on Thursday over the significance of where the other was educated.

Voters who live among mobile populations in urban areas may shrug off a candidate's birth, upbringing and education.

But voters in a state that's only a few generations removed from the frontier may perceive pedigree with much more importance.

Incumbent Republican Rep. Barbara Cubin launched into Democratic challenger Ted Ladd's background and its implications during a luncheon for the Natrona County Republican Women.

Ladd, she said, has lived in Wyoming for fewer than three years.

"He has only been registered to vote in Wyoming in the 2002 election; that's the only time he's ever been (here) to vote," she said.
